LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team wrapped up an outstanding regular season in style with a pair of 4-0 sweeps over Lehigh and Holy Cross on Saturday at Lehigh's Lewis Indoor Tennis Center. The Bison improved to 16-6 overall and 6-1 in the Patriot League, and they will be the No. 2 seed at next week's Patriot League Tournament, which will be held at Bucknell.
Bucknell and Lehigh both entered the day with one conference loss to Navy, so the Bison and Mountain Hawks were essentially playing for the No. 2 seed behind the unbeaten Midshipmen. Bucknell got off to a good start by claiming the doubles point, and then a dominant finish from No. 1 man Amar Tahirovic set the tone for singles.
Tahirovic fell behind 4-1 in the first set against Jose Murariu, and then he captured 11 straight games to win 6-4, 6-0. Liam Kilmer defeated Sean Jaeger 6-2, 6-2 at third singles, and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega ended it with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ofer Hacohen at No. 4.
Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald won 7-5 over Sean Jaeger and Marc Blekhman at No. 1 doubles, and Bain and Adam Stavrakas took a 6-2 result from Murariu and Luke Donovan at No. 2.
The Bison jumped right back on the courts against Holy Cross and improved to 15-0 all-time against the Crusaders. The same 1 and 2 doubles pairings clinched the doubles point, and for the second time on the day Liam Kilmer and Will Robinson were leading when the point was clinched.
Tahirovic and Stavrakas both won in straight sets at the top of the lineup, and McDonald ended it with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Camilo Illanes on Court 4.
Stavrakas, whose match against Lehigh went unfinished, has now won 21 straight singles contests to improve to 32-3 on the season. Tahirovic is now 30-3 with 12 straight wins. Those two juniors are just the second and third players in team history with 30 or more wins in a season.
Bucknell's 16 wins equals last year's total for the second-most in team history. The 1998 squad finished 19-2 under coach Bob Hammerlee.
The Patriot League Tournament gets going on Thursday with a first-round match between the eight and nine seeds. Bucknell will open tourney action in the quarterfinal round on Friday. Final seeds and pairings will be announced by the league office on Tuesday.
