LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior Amar Tahirovic has landed a spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles rankings for the first time in his career. The ITA ranks the top 125 singles players, and Tahirovic debuts at No. 124.
Tahirovic is 26-3 this season, with his only losses coming to Penn State's No. 51 Loren Byers in three sets at the ITA Regionals in October; to Notre Dame's No. 18 Sebastian Dominko in the quarterfinals of the ITA Conference Masters in Georgia in November; and to Advik Mareedu of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the No. 1 player in Division III. Tahirovic avenged the loss to Byers in January when Bucknell and Penn State met for a dual match in State College.
Only matches against Division I opponents are factored into the quality points for the ITA rankings, so the loss to Mareedu and a dual-match win against Johns Hopkins are not counted, leaving Tahirovic's ITA record at 25-2.
The last Bison player to be ranked during the spring season was Nick Bybel, who went as high as No. 95 as a senior in 2016. Bybel became the first Patriot League player to be ranked when he first appeared as a junior in 2015.
Tahirovic plays primarily at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots for the Bison, and he brings an eight-match winning streak into Friday's big match with Navy. Adam Stavrakas, who has won 18 straight and is 29-3 on the season, has played five times at No. 1 singles with Tahirovic sliding to No. 2. The duo is a combined 55-6 overall and 33-1 in dual matches in the top two spots in the lineup.
Tahirovic is now 76-17 in singles in his career, and the 76 wins are tied with Ira Reibeisen (2004-08) for second-most in team history. Bybel holds the record with 112. Tahirovic is also 64-31 in doubles, and his 139 combined wins rank seventh in school history. Bybel also owns that mark with 192.
Bucknell (3-0) and Navy (4-0) are the only two remaining unbeatens in Patriot League play, and the two sides will get together in Lewisburg on Friday at 3 p.m.
