With the team currently in the middle of spring break training in Virginia, the racing season is right around the corner. This year has marked a significant period of growth, as the team enters the spring season with 58 student athletes, making it the largest roster in the program's history. With a competitive group of returning athletes, recruited freshman, and excited walk-ons, the team is excited to get onto the race course and test their speed, and the first test will be this weekend. "The winter season went really well for us, huge prs and improvements from the end of last fall,' said junior Ryan Genel. "I am excited to get on the line and test the work we have put in against some fast crews!"
The Bison will kick off their spring season the same way they have for well over 10 years now, with a scrimmage against the University of Virginia and the US Naval Academy Lightweights on the Rivanna Reservoir this Saturday, March 15th. Coming off of a productive winter and spring break, this scrimmage always offers a challenging opening test against UVA, one of the best ACRA programs, and Navy. "Spring break training is one of our teams favorite weeks of the year, with plenty of warm weather and time on the water at Lake Anna," senior Seneker Zelov said. "From the top down, the boats are moving fast and feeling good. We can't wait to see how we match up against UVA. We're focused on making every day count." The scrimmage will start at 8am this Saturday.
The squad will then host the Susquehanna Duals on March 29th, and face off head-to-head against the University of Michigan and Rutgers University, two of the best programs that the ACRA has to offer. Assistant Coach Andrew Viola '24, who has been working mostly with the 3rd Varsity 8 and Freshman 8 during spring break said, "I'm excited to see how our 3rd Varsity 8 and Freshman 8 stack up against some of our top ACRA competition on March 29th at our only home race of the year. It will be good to get a checkpoint to test the work we've put in so far."
Bucknell will return to competition on April 5th when the team travels to Geneva, NY to face Hobart College for what has been a productive weekend of racing for both programs for the last three years. Sophomore coxswain Regine Escher "can't wait to test our speed against a varsity program on such a beautiful course. Our races with Hobart are always close and competitive."
The Bison then travel to the nation's capital, Washington DC for the third year in a row to the George Washington Invitational April 12-13. This event will have many top level ACRA programs in attendance, and give the team three races over the course of two days. "I'm really excited to race at the GW Invite in April," junior co-captain Christopher Kirby said. "It will be great to line up alongside the guys I trained with over the summer in Minnesota, as well as compete against top programs like Rutgers, UVA, GW and more. It will be a great opportunity to see how our boats have progressed since our last races with these teams. The competition and the atmosphere at this event are top-notch. I can't wait to see how we measure up!"
On April 19 the team will travel to Philadelphia for the Kerr Cup Regatta, hosted by Drexel University. This will be the first event of the season with heats and finals on the same day with a combination of ACRA and IRA programs competing on the Schuylkill River. The Kerr Cup also marks the last regular season event on the teams schedule before heading to the MARC Conference Championship and ACRA National Championship. The Kerr Cup offers a great test of speed before heading into these two championship regattas.
After taking a weekend to stay home and train, the team will travel to the 2025 Mid Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ on May 4. "The MARC is our last and most important test leading up to ACRA," said junior John Kirincich. "It provides increasingly competitive competition with many other top programs including George Washington, Lehigh, and Marietta. It also gives every rower a chance to compete for a medal which makes the stakes even higher."Â The Bison are the three time defending MARC team champions, and hope to take a run at a fourth team title in a row against the ever increasing speed of the MARC programs.
Finally the team will travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the 2025 ACRA National Championship Regatta on May 16-18. The 2024 regatta saw the Bison finish 6th as a team, win a National Championship in the 3rd Varsity 8 event, and finish in the top twelve in five out of the six events the team entered. With the largest team in program history the Bison are excited to see how the full roster competes against the best in the country.
