The Buckys are coming on May 5!
The annual Senior Awards Banquet traditionally has been one of the highlights of the Bucknell Athletics calendar. This year, in response to feedback from the Bucknell Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Bison student-athlete leaders, the year-end awards ceremony is being expanded to include all classes and has been re-branded as The Buckys.
Most of the traditional awards, such as the Christy Mathewson Award for the top athletes in the graduating class and the Alvin F. Jackson Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, will continue to be presented to members of the senior class. This year, several new awards will be introduced that are open to student-athletes from all classes, such as the Breakout Star, Rookie of the Year, and Player of the Year.
Men's soccer goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth and women's track and field student-athlete Madelyn Hudak will serve as emcees of The Buckys in its inaugural year. Important components of the reimagined awards ceremony are new interactive elements. Student-athletes in attendance will vote on several new awards, such as Play of the Year, Moment of the Year, and Team of the Year.
"I am very excited about the launch of The Buckys," said Jermaine Truax, Vice President for Athletics & Recreation. "Our student-athletes expressed a desire for a year-end celebration that includes all classes and recognizes the accomplishments and dedication of everyone who proudly wears the Orange & Blue. It is rare when we have a chance to get all 750-plus student-athletes and their coaches and staff in the same room, so I am looking forward to a fun celebratory evening."
The Buckys are set for Monday, May 5 at Sojka Pavilion. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., with the program starting at 7 p.m. While the event is planned exclusively for Bucknell student-athletes, coaches, and staff, the award winners will be announced on social media throughout the evening, and a recording of the event will be made available later on the Bucknell Athletics YouTube channel.
