PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Tyler O'Neill tossed a seven-inning complete game as the Bucknell baseball team split its doubleheader at Saint Joseph's at John W. Smithson Field on Saturday afternoon. O'Neill allowed just one run in Bucknell's 2-1 win in Game 1 before falling 11-0 in Game 2.
The Bison only needed its two-run second inning to take Game 1. O'Neill allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven batters. The Bison pushed its two runs across on Hawks' ace, Colton Book. Book came into the contest with no runs allowed in 13.0 innings with 23 strikeouts.
Sophomore Chris Morabito was 3-for-3 at the plate in Game 1 and junior Michael Trommer had two hits. Morabito and Trommer combined for five of Bucknell's seven hits in the game and the Bison were stifled to two hits in Game 2.
Game 1: Bucknell 2, Saint Joseph's 1 (7 inn.)
The Bison used the bunt to get its two runs past Colton Book. Morabito and sophomore Luke Nascimento laid down perfect bunts down the first baseline in consecutive at-bats to load the bases with no outs.
A good piece of hitting by sophomore Andrew Swenson brought a run home on a fielder's choice, and senior Matt Alexander laid another beautiful bunt for the sacrifice and what became the winning run.
O'Neill's only blemish was a lead-off home run in the bottom half of the second inning as Sam Meyer went yard to centerfield to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
The Hawks threatened with two runners on in the fifth inning with one out. O'Neill forced a ground ball, and senior Billy Kender and Swenson turned two up the middle. O'Neill did not allow a base runner after that, buckling down with three-up, three-down innings in the sixth and seventh to close out the game.
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 11, Bucknell 0 (7 inn.)
The Bison were held to just two hits in Game 2. Bucknell drew six walks but left all seven runners on base. Saint Joseph's broke open the game with a six-run fourth inning and never looked back, taking the win via a seven-inning mercy rule.
The Hawks got on the board in the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead on an unearned run. The fourth-inning explosion started with a hit-by-pitch, then two singles to load the bases. Three of the first four runs came from two walks and a wild pitch before Tim Dickinson drove in two more with a single into right field.
Crooked numbers for the Hawks in each of the next two innings made it an 11-0 ballgame. The Bison drew two walks in the seventh, but could not push any runs across the plate to keep the game alive.
The Bison are back at Depew Field for their home opener next weekend with Maine coming down to Lewisburg. The series starts with a 2:30 p.m. game on Friday afternoon followed by single games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
