SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team fought back after losing the doubles point, claiming victories in the top five singles positions to defeat Johns Hopkins 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Central PA Tennis Center. The Bison won their third straight match to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Adam Stavrakas and Amar Tahirovic, who have captured the last two Patriot Player of the Week honors, rolled to straight-set wins in the top two singles spots. Stavrakas defeated Chakor Rajendra 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, and Tahirovic downed Daniel Ardila 6-1, 6-2 on Court 2.
Liam Kilmer won 6-2, 6-2 over Brian Yi at No. 5, and Brendan McDonald clinched it with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Jason Li at No. 4. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega finished off the day with a three-set win over Dylan Blenkiron at No. 3.
Johns Hopkins, a strong Division III team that played in the NCAA Tournament last year, received a 6-4, 7-6 singles win from Zahari Stoimenov at No. 6. The Blue Jays also won close matches at first and third doubles to start the day with a 1-0 lead. Bain and Stavrakas were doubles winners for the Bison, defeating Yi and Marco Azar 7-5.
Bucknell's scheduled evening match with Rider was postponed due to the forecast of bad travel conditions. The Bison return to action on Sunday, hosting Morgan State at the Central PA Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
