WEST POINT, N.Y.- Ashley Sofilkanich scored 24 points but the Bucknell Bison could not keep up with the Army Black Knights in a 69-54 defeat on Saturday afternoon. The Orange & Blue dropped its second straight conference game and fell to 14-12 overall and 9-6 in Patriot League play. Second-place Army hit 20 wins with five losses and reinforced its conference placement at 12-3.
Sofilkanich's points were not a product of volume shooting. The sophomore standout scored her 24 points on 11 of 17 from the field and 2 of 5 from the charity stripe. Her effort moved her career total to 908 points in just under two seasons of production and returned her to averaging 20 ppg this season.
Bucknell outshot Army 48.9% to 40.4% but the Bison were done in by committing 16 turnovers to Army's seven (three of the Black Knights's miscues occurred in the fourth quarter with the game decided). Army also owned the offensive rebound category grabbing 14 to Bucknell's five. The Black Knights of the Hudson converted the boards into 15 second-chance points.
Reese Zemitis ran her double-digit scoring streak to eight games by scoring 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting including 3 of 4 from three-point land.
Isabella King scored seven points and her three-pointer moved her past Lauren Schober for sole possession of sixth place all-time at 139.
Sam Tillson's 17 points led Army.
The game started promising for Bucknell with a 5-0 lead. Army erased the advantage with a 10-2 run but a Tuana Coskun three tied the contest. The quarter ended with Bucknell ahead 14-13.
Both teams were as frigid as the weather to start the second quarter with one three-pointer by each squad for four minutes and 20 seconds. Tillson hit two free throws for the 18-17 Army lead and the Bison were never ahead again. The Black Knights continued to stack points and led 31-25 at halftime.
The Black Knights charged out of halftime with a 9-0 run establishing a double-digit lead that would never vanish and forcing a Bucknell timeout. The scoring barrage continued as Army shot confidently and accurately. Elana Weisman's layup cut the deficit to 48-36 with 2:40 remaining. Any hope was snuffed out 11 seconds later when Fiona Hastick drained a three-pointer. Army led 54-38 as the third quarter expired.
Army established its largest lead (22 points) with a Camryn Tade layup at 8:20. Bucknell parred the deficit to 15 points three different times but never inched closer and the Black Knights dribbled out the clock for the 69-54 triumph.
