Leclercq Receives Third Straight PL Defensive Player of the Week Award; Bucknell Record Fifth of the Season

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Senior defender Kira Leclercq continued her historical season by repeating as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive time, as announced Monday by the conference office. Leclercq has earned the award five times this year and nine times in her career. She surpassed Steph Graf (2006) for the most Defensive Player of the Week awards by a Bison player in a season. The senior is the first player since Lafayette's Lisa van der Geest in 2019 to win the honor thrice times consecutively.Â
Leclercq directed a tenacious defense that recorded two shutouts over A-10 opponents. The Bison routed I-80 Romp rival Lock Haven 4-0 and edged Davidson 1-0 to extend their winning streak to three games and emerge victorious in six of their last seven contests.
Lock Haven only recorded seven shots to Bucknell's 31. Leclercq and her fellow defenders were impenetrable for the hapless Haven attack. The senior's aerial passes regularly set up Bucknell counterattacks.Â
The defense saved their greatest performance for Davidson. The Wildcats obtained a mind-boggling 17 penalty corners and failed to convert on a single chance. Leclercq and her fellow fliers constantly disrupted Davidson's set-pieces and plays, holding the Wildcats to fewer shots (15) than penalty corners. The team held Sib Naaktgeboren, the A-10 goals leader with 15, to zero tallies on a game-high nine shots.Â
Leclercq generated her first defensive save in the second quarter when she prevented a Naaktgeboren shot from sneaking in past the right post. Her second defensive save arrived late in the fourth period with the Bison playing down two due to Ryane Fisahn's yellow card and the Wildcats pulling their goalkeeper. Matilda Colllins' shot flew by goalkeeper Sarah Althouse's but Leclercq was there to brush it away. Davidson had three penalty corners and four shots turned aside in the final frantic four minutes.Â
The senior star sits second in the conference in goals (10), points (26), and defensive saves (6).Â
Bucknell sits at 9-6 with the season finale this Saturday versus Lehigh. The Bison locked down a berth in the Patriot League Tournament for the 17th straight season.
