Field Hockey's Steadfast Defense Seals 1-0 Win over Davidson

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell's defense performed masterclass work in a 1-0 victory over Davidson on Sunday afternoon, as the Bison blanked the Wildcats 0-for-17 in penalty corners. Ryane Fisahn's fifth goal of the season occurred in the first quarter and held up as the only score. The triumph capped a successful day for six seniors.Â
Bucknell improved to 9-6 overall and guaranteed a winning record for the first time since the abbreviated COVID-season of 2020-21. Davidson fell to 8-8 overall and went 0-2 on its Pennsylvanian road trip against the Bison and St. Joseph's.Â
Sarah Althouse played an excellent game between the pipes with five saves, as she aided in Bucknell's sixth clean sheet of the season. Kira Leclercq blocked what Althouse missed, adding two defensive saves, and Brooke Parker supplied her first career defensive save on a Davidson breakaway opportunity.Â
The Bison's offense continued to produce opportunities, generating seven penalty corners and 17 shots, however, the sole score broke Bucknell's multi-goal streak.Â
The game's only goal arrived during the 12th minute. Bucknell generated a penalty corner and called a tap-in play for Reese Czajkowski. Liv Goeke blocked the chance but Ryane Fisahn was there for the rebound and the junior tapped the spinning sphere into the cage.Â
Davidson had multiple opportunities to tie throughout the game but the Bison defense stood like a brick wall.Â
The Wildcats pulled their goalie with 4:27 remaining and Fisahn received a yellow card around the same time, giving Davidson a two-woman advantage. The visitors promptly took advantage and kept the Bison besieged for the remaining minutes. Bucknell refused to buckle, as Althouse saved a shot, Leclercq recorded her second defensive save, and the defense blocked another chance.Â
The greatest danger arrived with 41 seconds left when Sib Naaktgeboren, the A-10 leader in goals with 15, obtained a great look but her shot went wide.Â
Leclercq lifted an aerial to put the ball on the other side of the field to ice the game.
The Bison celebrated six seniors: Vivienne Lachaux, Kira Leclercq, Nicole Moran, Nicky Punt, Gianna Puorro, and Alexandra Shizas.Â
Bucknell finishes the regular season next Saturday versus Lehigh. The Bison are aiming for double-digit wins for the first time since 2018.Â
