Men's Soccer Hosts Army for Patriot League Showdown

- The Bucknell men's soccer team hosts Army in a Patriot League matchup on Saturday at Emmitt Field at 7 p.m. Both sides have a 1-1-1 mark in the league through three matches.
- Bucknell is coming off of a 1-1 draw on the road at Mount St. Mary's as the Bison out-shot its opponent 18-2 in the match. Army is coming off of a 2-0 loss to No. 13 Princeton where the Black Knights held their own and had more shots on target.
- The Bison are 2-1 at Emmitt Field this season after Boston delivered the first home loss of the season last Saturday. Bucknell is 3-1-3 on the road. Â Â
- The Bison settled for a 1-1 draw against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night at the Waldron Family Stadium. Bucknell out-shot the Mountaineers 18-2, but could not find the winner as goalkeeper Julian Marcos made several tough saves to keep the match level.
- Both goals were scored within a minute of each other in the first half. It was Drew Roskos who opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute. The forward caused chaos deflecting the ball back into the box and the ball fell to him right in front of the net to put home the opening goal.
- Just 45 second later, a mistake at Bucknell's defensive end sent an attacker through on goal, and keeper Freddie Lapworth was late to the challenge to give the Mountaineers a penalty. Graham Dougald buried the opportunity to level the match 1-1.
- Bucknell out-shot the Mountaineers 5-1 after the first 45 minutes, then put the pressure on with six shots on target and four shots that were blocked in front of goal. The Mount defense stood strong, including six saves by Marcos in the half.
- The Bison opened the half with five shots including two on target in the first 10 minutes. Ben Sheffield nearly got on the end of a set piece with a great header in the 56th minute, but Marcos got there quick to make a stop. Jakuba Samelko had another good look on the ensuing corner, but the angle was too tight to squeeze it past the keeper.
- Samelko had another great look in the 82nd minute after the ball deflected over the Mountaineers back line. The forward pounced on the opportunity and took a half-volley on a bouncing ball. Marcos came up again, extending his leg to get a foot on the ball.
- Jack Lucas had Bucknell's last big opportunity in the 88th minute to force another big save. Lucas got the ball on the wing and carried toward the midfield. He found some space and fired a dangerous shot that was saved and out for a corner.
- Lapworth made one save in the match in the 80th minute. Isaiah Garcia carried down the wing and took a hard shot, but Lapworth got low to make a good stop in goal.
- Bucknell had 12 corners in the match. Samelko finished the game with three shots on target. The Mount had just one shot on the penalty goal through the first 80 minutes as the Bison defense was solid aside from the mistake leading to the goal.
- Bucknell is ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division I rankings. Bucknell was ranked No. 1 through the first five weeks until Boston took over for the top spot after the 3-2 win on Saturday.
- Bucknell's impressive start includes a season-opening win at No. 23 Hofstra, a 2-2 draw at Maryland and a 3-2 win over St. Bonaventure.
- Bucknell's loss to George Mason came on a last-minute goal from the Patriots to take the match 3-2. Â
- Bucknell has scored in the final 16 minutes in six of its eight matches and scored a goal in the final five minutes in three of its matches. The Bison have trailed in six matches, coming from behind in each to erase the deficit. The Bison are 5-1 in matches they have trailed in, losing to only George Mason on a last-minute goal.
- At Hofstra, the Bison erased a 1-0 deficit before Jack Lucas scored the match-winner in the 75th minute. Against St. Bonaventure, the Bison trailed 2-1 early in the second half before Lucas equalized and junior Jakub Samelko won the match in the 88th minute.
- At Maryland, the Bison erased a 2-0 deficit with goals from two of its senior center backs. Jackson Sullivan converted a penalty kick and Ben Sheffield leveled the match with an 86th-minute goal. The Bison erased another 2-0 deficit, equalizing the match against George Mason 2-2 before the Patriots scored its late goal to win the match.
- Bucknell then trailed 1-0 to Old Dominion and 2-0 to Saint Francis before scoring four unanswered goals in each of the two matches.
- Lucas was on the score sheet in the first five matches with four goals and one assist. Lucas has earned two (PL) Offensive Player of the Week awards thus far. He has two match-winner goals against Old Dominion and Hofstra. Â
- Lucas was Bucknell's top point-scorer and goal-scorer in 2024, tallying three goals and four assists in the campaign. This season, Lucas leads the Patriot League with five goals and two assists for 12 points. He has 20 shots, including 12 shots on target.
- Bucknell has 22 goals thus far from eight different goal-scorers to rank first in the PL. Forwards Drew Roskos and Zane Domsohn each have four goals this season. Forward Jakub Samelko has three goals this season. Roskos and Domsohn each have an assist for nine points. Jackson Sullivan has four points this season on two goals.
- Winston Oziri, Ben Sheffield and Jacob Thomas all have a goal this season.
- Cade Whitmire has four assists on the season for three points on the season. David Krumov, Nate Coughlin, Cohen Weaver and goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth all have two assists. Kiko Hidalgo and Kasper Piela each have an assist.
- Bucknell has been scored on 16 times this season. Lapworth has a .652 save percentage and two shutouts this season. He has made 30 saves in 10 games thus far.
- Lapworth is the Preseason Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year after being named the 2024 PL Goalkeeper of the Year. Lapworth was a First Team All-PL and a First Team All-Region honoree in 2024. Lapworth was named one of nine goalkeepers to the United Soccer Coaches Goalkeepers to Watch List and one of 29 players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
- Senior midfielder Jimmy Pombor was named to the Preseason All-PL squad. Pombor, a holding midfielder, had an excellent debut season in Orange and Blue after transferring from Lock Haven. Pombor has started in all but two matches since his arrival.Â
- Bucknell has 23 returning players on the 2025 squad, including 17 upperclassmen. Bucknell's freshman class includes center backs Jacob Thomas and Gavin Newcombe, wing back Nate Coughlin, holding midfielder Zain Elder and goalkeeper Thomas Yerbury.
- Dave Brandt is Bucknell's 14th full-time head coach and just the third dating back to 1967. Brandt, who is now in his fourth season at Bucknell, brought with him a remarkable career record of 354-86-40 in stints at Messiah, Navy, and Hope. Brandt won six Division III national championships at Messiah and led Navy to the 2013 Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament first-round win.  Â
- Bucknell ranks first in the Patriot League and 24th in the nation with 22 goals. The Bison are averaging 2.20 goals per game to rank 24th in the nation.
- Bucknell ranks first in the PL with 13.8 shots per game and ranks first with 73 shots on goal and 7.30 shots on goal per game. The 7.30 shots on goal per game rank 10th in the nation.
- Lucas leads the league with five goals, 12 points and two game-winning goals. He ranks seventh with 20 shots and ranks third with 12 shots on target.
- Roskos and Domsohn have the second-most goals scored in the PL with four goals apiece. Roskos ranks fifth with 22 shots and ranks sixth with 10 shots on goal. Samelko ranks fourth with three goals and ranks seventh with 10 shots on goal with only 11 total shots. Whitmire ranks second with his four assists.
- Bucknell ranks seventh in the nation with a .529 shot accuracy. The Bison rank 22nd with 62 total points. Â
- Bucknell completed an incredible turnaround in 2024, winning its first Patriot League Championship since 2014. The Bison went from last place with a 2-10-1 (1-6-1 PL) record in 2023 to a 7-7-6 (4-1-4 PL) record in 2024 with a PL regular-season co-championship with Boston University. Bucknell defeated American in penalties in the semifinal match before a 3-0 rout of Colgate in the championship match. The only other team to make a last-to-first finish in their conference last season was North Florida Atlantic Sun Conference.
- Bucknell was one of the top defensive sides in the PL last season, allowing just five goals in nine league matches. The Bison only allowed multiple goals in five of its matches on the season, including a 2-1 loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Providence.
- The Bison allowed 21 goals in 20 games, allowing 1.038 goals per game that ranked 39th in the nation. Bucknell's eight clean sheets ranked ninth in nation and the Bison ranked 36th with a .400 shutout percentage. Freddie Lapworth led the PL with a .774 save percentage that also ranked 29th in the nation.
- On the attack, Bucknell's .950 goals per game average ranked last in the Patriot League despite ranking first in the Patriot League with 210 shots and ranking third with 82 shots on goal. Bucknell had 12 different goal scorers and 13 different players with an assist.
- Sophomore Drew Roskos had a great debut season for the Bison, netting three goals with three assists to rank second on the team with nine points. Juniors Cade Whitmire and David Krumov each had a team-high four assists.
- Boston is 3-3-4 this season and 1-1-1 in the Patriot League. In the PL, Army defeated Boston 1-0, tied Lehigh 3-3, and lost to American 3-1.
- Against Lehigh, army led 3-1 before Lehigh leveled the match with two goals in the final four minutes.
- Army is most recently coming off of a 2-0 loss to No. 13 Princeton. The Black Knights gave up a goal in the first 10 minutes and the final 10 minutes, but had more shots on target in the match.
- The Black Knights took down Penn State 2-1 and tied Marist who is now ranked 17th.
- Ronald Zhai leads the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Jubril Bamgbala is second on the quad with two goals for four points.
- Kelly Cooper, Jack De Simeone, Miles Hadley, Jack Kryger and Kasem Minzey all have a goal.
- Jack Meyer leads the team with two assists and five other players have one assist.
- Zhai was second on the team last season with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Kryger had seven points on three goals and one assist. Bamgbala had six points with two goals and two assists.
- Army has used three goalkeepers this season. Michael Guiry has played in eight matches with seven starts. He has 32 saves and eight goals against with a .800 save percentage.
- Collin gilbert has made two starts and has a .818 save percentage with two goals allowed. Blair Camargo has made one start with two goals allowed.
- Bucknell is 18-24-1 all-time against the Black Knights, dating back to 1931. Army has had the better of the Bison in the last six matches with a 4-1-1 mark over Bucknell.
- In 2024, the Bison picked up its first win over Army since 2017. Waldemar Kattrup scored in the 85th minute to give the Bison the win. The goal was assisted by Cade Whitmire.
- The Bison are back in action on Tuesday to host Binghamton in a nonconference matchup with kick off at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field. Â
- Bucknell is 5-8-5 all-time against Binghamton and tied last season 1-1. Â
