EASTON, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison (7-7, 2-1 Patriot League) returned to .500 overall and improved to 2-1 in conference play with a decisive 64-48 victory over the Lafayette Leopards (4-10, 1-2 Patriot League) on Wednesday night. The Orange & Blue overcame an early deficit rolling to its second double-digit conference victory.
"I thought the team buckled down in the second half defensively," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. "Offensively, I thought our post game forced them to help in the paint giving us some clean looks from three and tonight they went in."
Three players combined for 54 of the Bison's 64 points.
Ashley Sofilkanich recorded another banner night with her ninth career double-double tallying 22 points and gathering ten rebounds. The sophomore standout has scored 20+ points in eight of the Bison's 14 games. Her six assists set a new career-high and she added five blocks. Sofilkanich currently ranks eighth nationally in blocks per game (2.54).
Sophia Sabino posted a career-high 16 points on an efficient 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-4 from downtown.
Reese Zemitis also provided 16 points and ran her streak of games with four three-pointers to three. The freshman has averaged just over 14 points per game since her insertion in the starting lineup.
Both teams shot 50% from three-point land. Bucknell hit 9-of-18 attempts while Lafayette connected on 5-of-10. The Bison were 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the field and Lafayette were 18-of-50 (36%). The Leopards were perfect from the free throw line going 7-for-7 to Bucknell's 7-of-10 shooting.
The Bison led 13-5 early before a 19-4 Lafayette run had the Leopards with their longest lead of the contest. Two three-pointers by Zemitis and Isabella King sparked the Bison comeback and a Sabino layup regained the Bison lead.
A 4-0 Lafayette stretch forged the Leopards ahead but Sofilkanich drained a trey to tie the game. Sofilkanich added another basket and Sabino scored the final three points of the first half for a 33-28 Bucknell halftime lead. The Orange & Blue would never trail again.
The Leopards cut the deficit to 35-31 on a Teresa Kiewiet basket but Sofilkanich answered sparking a 10-2 Bucknell run climaxed by Tuana Coskun's sole bucket. Lafayette counterattacked and narrowed the Bison lead to 47-39 entering the final quarter.
Two three-pointers by Sabino and Abby Antognoli set up a 50-44 situation. Lafayette had several attempts to chip away but the Orange & Blue played tough defense preventing further scoring. Sabino drained another three-pointer, Elana Weisman converted a layup, and Zemitis hit her third three-pointer for a game-sealing 58-44 lead.
Zemitis hit another trey for the final 64-48 score. The basket gave her 16 points and set a new career-high for the freshman. Zemitis now has four straight games with double-digit scoring and fifth overall.
Coach Woodruff improved to 10-1 overall against the Leopards and the Bison are now 23-23 all-time at Lafayette.
