Men's Basketball Now 5-0 at Home in Patriot League Play after 79-67 Win over Loyola
1/29/2025 9:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE:
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Strong outside shooting and interior rebounding led the Bucknell men's basketball team to a 79-67 victory over Loyola Maryland on Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison went 11-for-21 from 3-point distance, led by four from Ruot Bijiek, and outrebounded the Greyhounds 36-27. Noah Williamson tied his career-high with 16 rebounds while adding 13 points and four assists, and Bucknell improved to 5-0 at home and 5-4 overall in Patriot League play.
Achile Spadone scored a team-high 14 points -- eight coming in the game's first three minutes to get the Bison off and running -- and added five rebounds and three steals. Bijiek's 12 points and 11 each from Elvin Edmonds IV and Brandon McCreesh gave the Bucknell five players in double figures. Josh Bascoe finished with nine points, seven assists (compared to one turnover), and three steals. The Bison turned the ball over only three times in the second half and finished with 17 assists to eight miscues.
Williamson (16.0 ppg coming in) and Bascoe (15.4) were both held under their season scoring averages but contributed significantly in other ways. Williamson made his only 3-point attempt of the night with 8:39 left in the second half. It was his ninth consecutive made three, starting with his 6-for-6 performance at Colgate on Jan. 20, and that ties the school record set by Mike Bright in 1993. Bright hit nine in a row from downtown on the way to a 9-for-10 performance -- coincidentally against these same Loyola Greyhounds – in Davis Gym. Williamson's 16 rebounds matched his career high set at Lafayette last season.
Jacob Theodosiou scored a game-high 22 points for the Greyhounds, who slipped to 3-6 in league play with their third straight loss.
Bucknell never trailed in the game and led for all but 50 seconds as Spadone's eight points staked the Bison to a quick 11-2 lead. Later in the half, Bijiek hit a 3-pointer after an offensive rebound from Williamson to provide the first 10-point lead of the night at 21-11. McCreesh canned the first of his three trifectas to make it 31-19, and Bucknell led 40-29 at halftime.
Loyola started the second half on a 17-9 run, thanks in part to Bucknell's 3-for-14 cold stretch, and the Greyhounds pulled within three at 49-46 after a 3-point play from Braeden Speed.
Bucknell quickly responded with an 8-0 to regain control. Bijiek's 3-pointer off a feed from Bascoe triggered the surge, and McCreesh and Bascoe followed with layups. After Speed ended Loyola's drought with a layup of his own, Williamson hit his record-tying 3-pointer and Edmonds added a layup to give the Bison their largest lead of the night at 62-48.
Theodosiou canned three treys and a layup over a four-minute span to keep Loyola engaged, but McCreesh hit a dagger three from the left corner to push the margin back to 14 with 3:34 to go. Bucknell went 8-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice its fifth straight home victory and third straight win over the Greyhounds.
Bucknell finished with a positive or even assist-to-turnover ratio for the fifth straight game, and the Bison limited Loyola to four offensive rebounds after struggling on the glass in Saturday's overtime loss at Boston University.
Bucknell shot 45.6 percent from the field and went 16-for-23 from the foul line. Loyola shot 45.1 percent, including a solid 10-for-25 showing from long range, and went 11-for-17 at the charity stripe.
American's win at Lafayette coupled with Colgate's loss at Army sends the Eagles into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League at 7-2 at the halfway point of the conference slate. Colgate and Army are tied for second at 6-3, followed by Bucknell, Boston University, and Navy in a three-way tie for fourth at 5-4. Loyola, Holy Cross, and Lafayette are all 3-6, followed by Lehigh at 2-7.
Bucknell and Navy get together on Saturday afternoon in Annapolis. The Bison will be looking for the season sweep after winning 73-69 at home on Jan. 18.
