Men's Water Polo Splits Saturday Matches at the Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison men's water polo team (4-6, 1-1 MAWPC) split Saturday's matches versus No. 10 Fordham and McKendree. Fordham defeated Bucknell 20-9 in a MAWPC game but the Orange & Blue rebounded to defeat McKendree 17-11 in the nightcap via support from nine different scorers.
Aleska Stefanovic recorded seven goals in two games to lead the Bison. His six scores against McKendree were instrumental in the victory. Shay Gillearn supplied five goals to serve as Stefanovic's scoring wingman.
Fordham Recap
The three-time defending MAWPC champion Rams quickly laid claim to the game dashing out to a 7-1 lead in the opening stanza. Freshman Tyler Hedblad provided Bucknell's sole score when the deficit was 3-0. However, Fordham ended the period on a 4-0 run establishing a suitable advantage.
The second quarter was played on closer terms. Sean Tunnicliff and Stefanovic found the net for Bucknell but the Rams continued to grow its lead scoring four goals for the 11-3 halftime score.
Bucknell displayed offensive burst with four goals in the third period. It was a multi-pronged attack with four Bison scoring. Jake Wedding started the party and was followed by Hedblad and Tunnicliff. Gillearn added his tally with 14 seconds left. Fordham did not halt its offensive attack with the Rams tallying six goals.
The Bison finished the match with some momentum for the next game, scoring two goals and holding Fordham to three scores. Hedblad and Tunnicliff obtained the final goals. Hedblad's score finalized the score at 20-9.
McKendree Recap
McKendree scored the opening goal but then the Bison rode a 5-1 scoring wave obtaining a lead they would never relinquish. Stefanovic scored three of the goals during the run, and Gillearn and Tunnicliff each added a tally as well.
Stefanovic tallied two more goals in the second period. Gillearn chipped in a score and Maxime Touzot entered the scoresheet with a goal. The Bearcats ended the half with a 2-0 run cutting the deficit to 9-5.
The Bearcats drew within 10-7 in the third quarter. Once again, the Bison used a big run to shut down any dramatic counterattack. Gillearn and Stefanovic handed out their typical scores and they were joined by new scorers Jack Murad and Jovan Udovicic as Bucknell led 14-7.
The Bison were outscored 4-3 in the final period but it did not matter as Bucknell finished out the 17-11 victory. Wedding tallied a goal and was joined by two new scorers in Jack Bruce and Ned Smith. The Bearcats ended the scoring by grabbing a goal with 28 seconds remaining. It was too late, too little.
