LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison women's cross country team accounted itself well against prestigious and difficult competition last Friday at Penn State's Spiked Shoe Invitational. The Orange & Blue finished ninth as the highest non-Power & Ivy League team. Freshman Kerry O'Day played a key role in the Bison's top ten placement and the league office awarded her with Rookie of the Week. It is Bucknell's second-straight week. Anna Carruthers received the honor last week.Â
"Kerry had a fantastic race and she handled the intense competition and the longer and tougher 6k course like a seasoned veteran," said head coach Kevin Donner. "She has a great future in store for us."
O'Day placed 83rd at the Invitational, finishing as the fifth and final Bison scorer. Her time of 21:59.8 marked her as the 14th highest freshman and the highest placing Patriot League freshman in the race. Her placement pushed the Bison past Navy in the overall standings and had Bucknell only 14 points away from Maryland for eighth place. Â
The newcomer has made an immediate impact as one of Bucknell's brightest young stars. She opened her career finishing fourth at the Father Bede Invitational and displayed excellent stamina in her first collegiate 6k at the Spiked Shoe Invitational.Â
O'Day and the Bison return to action in early October at Lehigh's annual Paul Short Run.Â
