PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bucknell men's water polo team dropped a 17-7 decision to sixth-ranked Princeton on Sunday morning, closing out its slate at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison fell to 2-5 in a challenging early season schedule, with all five losses coming to nationally ranked teams. Princeton remained unbeaten at 7-0 while outscoring its opponents 157-49.
Sunday's match was all even at 1-1 after the Bison turned in a strong opening quarter. They earned numerous defensive stops and took an early 1-0 lead on a rocket from distance to the top right corner of the goal from Tyler Hedblad. Logan McCarroll tied it for Princeton with 3:17 left in the first quarter, and then the Tigers outscored the Bison 6-0 in the second quarter and 8-3 in the third to take control.
Five different Bucknell players scored goals. Freshmen Hedblad and Jovan Udovicic led the way with two goals each, and Sean Tunnicliff, Aleksa Stefanovic, and Jack Murad also struck. Mateo Herrera got the start in goal and finished with eight saves.
The Bison will make their home debut next weekend with four games at the Bucknell Invitational. Three of those contests will come against MAWPC rivals in Mount St. Mary's, Fordham, and Wagner, and the Bison will also play a non-league match against McKendree. They will kick off the weekend against The Mount on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
