VESTAL, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (1-1) split the opening day of the Bearcat Classic. Bucknell fell in four sets to Toledo but rallied to sweep Merrimack in the second game.
Toledo Recap
Toledo seized an early 4-2 lead before the Bison counterattacked with a 7-0 run. The Rockets were undaunted and tied the score at 11. Bucknell forged ahead 15-13, but the Rockets again rose to the occasion, grabbing a 16-15 advantage. The two teams traded points like baseball cards until 20-20. The moment was waiting for a squad to put its foot down. Unfortunately for Bucknell, Toledo embarked on a 5-0 run to win the first set.
Toledo continued its momentum into the second set, sprinting to an 8-2 start. A timeout settled down the Bison and the comeback began. Bucknell crept back point by point until it was level at 15-15. The tie was part of a 9-2 run, which saw the Orange & Blue seize the lead for good. A Toledo timeout temporarily halted the process but a Bri Frazilus kill ended the set 25-21 Bucknell.
The Rockets launched into the third quarter, zooming out to an 8-0 run and increased their lead to 13-4 before the Bison had a 4-0 counterattack. Bucknell worked within 17-11 before Toledo exploded to win the set, 25-15.
The final set featured riveting back-and-forth action as neither team would obtain more than a three-point advantage. The Bison grabbed a 22-20 lead before a 5-1 Toledo run, with the final point coming on a Frazilus ball-handing error, ending the set and the game.
Frazilus led the team with 14 kills and Cameron Lloyd had 12 digs.
Merrimack Recap
The first set started close and was 5-5 before the Bison blew away the Warriors, winning the segment on a 20-7 run. The Bison used a 7-0 stretch to pull away and the Orange & Blue never allowed Merrimack any chance to rally.
The second set was a much closer affair but the Bison never trailed. Bucknell blitzed to a 4-0 lead and improved to 9-4. The Warriors rallied to tie the game at 14-14. Bucknell regrouped, using an 11-4 run to win the set and put themselves in the catbird seat for a sweep.
Merrimack fought hard in the final set and went up 13-9. The Bison then embarked on an epic 12-0 run to completely flip momentum around. Merrimack scored three points when it was 24-15 but they were merely delaying the inevitable. A combo block ended the set and game in Bucknell's favor.Â
Frazilus's 11 kills were the highest on the team.
