"I am beyond thankful for the support that Bucknell University has provided me over the past four years as a student-athlete and through graduation to the Paralympic Trials this weekend," said Sample. "It has been an honor to race in the Orange and Blue with my final race in the uniform being the most important race of my entire career. Racing collegiately and in Para Track and Field has been a life-changing experience for me, I hope that my participation inspires others to challenge themselves to do what might not seem initially possible."
The 400-meter dash finals will take place on Friday, July 19 at 5:30 p.m. Sample will have a chance to rest up before competing the next morning in the 100-meter dash at 11:12 a.m. The hours of rest will be crucial as the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s along with the Sunshine State's trademark humidity.Â
Bucknell track & field head coach Kevin Donner is excited for Sample saying, "We are proud of all of Rayven's accomplishments here at Bucknell and we look forward to seeing what he can do at this weekend's Paralympic Trials as he attempts to qualify for Paris. He has worked hard and brought plenty of greart energy to our program."
Sample is not a stranger to the U.S. Paralympic Team or medals at this level of competition. He represented America in the 2020 Games (postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic)Â and finished eighth in the 400-meter dash. His accomplishment earned him Bison of the Week. In June 2022, Sample won the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes at the Paralympic National Championships in the T45-46-47 Division. He duplicated the feat in the 2023 USA Paralympic Championships. He picked up bronze in the T47 100-meter dash at the 2023 Parapan American Games.Â
Coach Alexander is bullish on Sample's chances, "I'm excited for Rayven headed into the trials. He has been looking great in recent training and I think he has a real chance to hit personal records here. If he can execute the way I know he's capable of he will be selected as one of the 28 men headed to Paris for Team USA."
The Public Team Announcement will be on Sunday, July 21 at 9:30am EST at the Miramar Cultural Center. The doors will open at 9:00am EST.
