LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Volleyball team enters 2024 trying to build upon its 2023 campaign, the program's most successful season in 20 years. The Bison return most of their starters and introduce an exciting group of freshmen. The combination grouped with last year's postseason baptism should pivot Bucknell into the Patriot League's top echelon. The 2024 schedule has been assembled with that goal.
The three non-conference weekends will be spent on the road as the Bison eschewed hosting a three-day tournament. The Orange & Blue open the season at the Bearcat Classic, held by Binghamton University from August 30-31. Bucknell will tangle with Toledo, match up with Merrimack, and finish with Binghamton.
The Toledo Rockets went 14-17 overall and 11-7 in the always competitive Mid-American Conference (MAC). Their season concluded with a sweep in the MAC Tournament Semifinals against Western Michigan. The Merrimack Warriors finished 2023 with a 7-21 record. Merrimack struggled in non-conference competition but went 6-8 in the Northeastern Conference (NEC). The Warriors ended 2023 on a five-game losing streak. Binghamton went 15-13 overall and 6-4 in America East. The Bearcats made the AE Championship Game and fell in straight sets to the first-seeded UMBC Retrievers.
Bucknell competes in the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary on September 6-7. The Bison returned the favor after William & Mary journeyed to Lewisburg for 2023's Bucknell Invitational. The Orange & Blue face the Tribe in a Friday night showdown and then play George Mason and Quinnipiac on Saturday.
William & Mary, despite going 3-0 at the Bucknell Invitational, finished 2023 with a 13-15 record and an 8-10 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), which has since been rebranded to the Coastal Athletic Association. George Mason went 9-21 overall and 5-13 in the Atlantic 10. Quinnipiac dominated the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) finishing 14-4 in league play to pair with a 19-10 record. The Bobcats fell to the first-seeded Iona Gaels in the MAAC Championship Game.
The final non-conference weekend (Sept. 13-14) comes at the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational, held by Canisius University. Bucknell faces the host team on Friday before dueling Youngstown State and nearby Niagara on Saturday.
Canisius finished 10-16 overall and 8-10 in MAAC play in 2023. They hosted the same invitational last year and went 0-2. In 2023, Youngstown State recorded a 9-20 overall mark and a 4-14 margin in the Horizon League. Niagara appeared at the 2023 Bucknell Invitational but did not face the Bison. Destiny refused to be diverted and the Purple Eagles will clash with the Orange & Blue. Niagara finished 13-14 overall but posted a 12-6 record in MAAC play. The mark clinched a quarterfinals spot against Rider where the Purple Eagles were swept.
Bucknell starts conference play with four straight home matches. The Bison welcome Holy Cross and Army on Sept. 20 and 21.
Holy Cross finished last in the Patriot League in 2023 while Army tied for second place with American and Bucknell when all three squads went 11-5 in conference competition. Bucknell swept Holy Cross and split the series 1-1 with Army.Â
A pair of Pennsylvanian rivals in Lafayette and Lehigh will arrive the following weekend. Lafayette tangles with Bucknell on Sept. 28 and Lehigh faces the Bison the next day.
Both Keystone State teams tied for seventh (5-11) in the Patriot League and Bucknell went 4-0 against them.Â
The first 2024 conference road games feature a trip below the Mason-Dixon Line to play American (Oct. 4) and Navy (Oct. 5).
American won the tiebreaker over Bucknell by defeating the Bison in the final regular season game. The Eagles swept Loyola (Md.) and Army in the Patriot League Tournament before being defeated in straight sets by Colgate in the Championship Game. Navy finished fifth and upset Bucknell in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Bucknell was swpet by American and split with Navy in regular season play. The Midshipmen swept Maryland and Syracuse in non-conference action.Â
The next weekend has a home/road set-up. Bucknell greets Loyola (Md.) on Oct. 12 and travels the following day to play reigning league champion Colgate.
Loyola (Md.) placed sixth in the Patriot League and was beaten by American in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Colgate repeated as the regular season and league champions. Bucknell upset the Raiders in Hamilton to break their 33-game home winning streak. The Bison swept Loyola twice and went 1-1 against Colgate.Â
After a bye week, Bucknell completes the Pennsylvania circuit with two matches against Lehigh (Oct. 25) and Lafayette (Oct. 26).
November dawns with a visit from the Naval Academy on All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and American enters on the next calendar flip.
The Bison head up I-84 the following week to face Holy Cross (Nov. 8) and return to the banks of the Hudson to play Army (Nov. 9).
Bucknell completes the conference road stretch at Loyola on Nov. 15 and then hurries home to host Colgate (Nov. 16) with conference seeding possibly on the line.
The Patriot League Quarterfinals begin on Nov. 19, followed by the semifinals on the 22nd and the Championship Match on the 24th.
