EUGENE, Ore.- Evelyn Bliss repeated as the USA Women's Track & Field Under-20 javelin throw champion for the second consecutive season with her gold medal finish on Wednesday. Bliss threw 168-01 in her final attempt to clinch the victory and unlocked qualification for the World's U20 competition. The competition was held at the University of Oregon's Heyward Field.

"Champions find a way to win on off days," said throws coach Ryan Protzman, who was present at the competition. "None of the ladies in the field were really close to what they are capable of. Evie struggled in preliminaries, but really started competing in the finals. She got the win, which is always the main focus during a championships. She doesn't want her season to end, so why not add a meet in the fall?"
The freshman thrower received a second wind in the finals round. Bliss ranked fourth in the preliminaries to qualify for the finals round by throwing 145-0. She continued to grow stronger and stronger until she uncorked the 168-01 throw in the final round to establish first place. She held onto the position as the last few throwers could not dislodge her heave. Bliss entered the competition as the number one seed in 2023 and 2024 and both times she defended her catbird slot.Â
Bliss flipped the script from last season's victory when she threw the gold-winning 169-11 mark on the first attempt. The change demonstrates the increased mental and physical stamina that is characteristically bred into Bison throwers. Bliss kept her focus after receiving All-America honors less than a week ago. She has had success in Eugene, winning two U20 competition and finishing 13th in the NCAA National Championships.Â
"I really had to work for this win today, but it is an honor to win back-to-back national championships and represent Team USA again at World's in Peru," said Bliss.Â
The 2024 World U20 Championships will be held in Lima, Peru on August 24-27. Bliss will also compete in the US Olympic Team Trials on June 21-30 in Eugene.Â
