Men’s Tennis Finishes Strong in 5-2 Win over Lehigh
4/20/2024 6:40:00 PM | Men's Tennis
LEWISBURG, Pa. – After Lehigh put the first two points on the board, the Bucknell men's tennis team stormed back by winning the final five singles matches to take a 5-2 win over Lehigh on Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Courts. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega provided the clinching point with a three-set win at No. 3 singles to help the Bison improve to 14-6 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League.
After Lehigh won at first and third doubles to grab the early lead, the two teams engaged in some tightly contested singles play. Three of the six singles tilts went to three sets, and five sets were decided in tiebreakers.
Wyeth Anzilotti gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead with his straight-set win at No. 6 singles, Amar Tahirovic at No. 1 and Liam Kilmer at No. 4 evened the contest with straight-set wins, and then Tim Zelikovsky's 6-0 whitewash in the third set against Benedict Horn-Bourque put the Bison on the brink.
The final two matches on the courts were both very tight, however. As Adam Stavrakas and Marc Blekhman went to a tiebreaker at 6-all in the third set on Court 2, Bain picked up a key break to take a 5-2 lead in his third set against Sean Jaeger. Bain won the match-clinching point, and then moments later Stavrakas won the tiebreaker 9-7 to finish off the 5-2 final.
Zelikovky improved to 27-3 on the season with his singles win. The 27 victories are second-most in a season in Bucknell history trailing only Nick Bybel, who went 38-3 in 2014-15. Bain and Tahirovic now have 24 wins, which are tied for fifth on the single-season chart.
Bucknell has one more match remaining in the regular season. The Bison host Lafayette on Sunday at 1 p.m., with Zelikovsky set to be recognized on Senior Day before the match.
