LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Bison softball team collected a pivotal win against the Colgate Raiders and first baseman MaKenzie Hilling played a crucial role at the plate, in the field, and as a captain. As such, she was christened with Patriot League Player of the Week. It is the first time she has received the honor.Â
"I'm thrilled for MaKenzie to receive player of the week," said head coach Sarah Caffrey. "She has been quietly having a strong season for us and I'm so happy that she is being recognized for her hard work. She is a big leader for us and has grown so much as an athlete this year so to see her having success is fulfilling. I'm just really proud of her for her ability to show up every day and get better and she has earned this moment."
Hilling batted a sizzling .625 against Colgate's veteran staff. The first baseman recently moved to second in the batting order and her presence there jumpstarted the offense. Bucknell scored 17 runs over the three games, the best output in weeks. She drove in two RBIs and scored three runs.Â
Hilling has one of the best batting eyes in the league. She collected three walks the past weekend to boost her total to 21, one of the highest sums in the Patriot League. The three free passes granted her a .727 on-base percentage against Colgate.Â
The first baseman shined in the field, fielding a flawless 1.000 on 17 chances. Hilling has fielded .992 with only two errors during the season.Â
Hilling and the Bison ship up to Boston this weekend to play the league-leading Terriers.
