INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA announced its 47 at-large selections for the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Tuesday, and freshman Noah Mulvaney (165) was among those listed that will be joining the 283 student-athletes that already qualified through their conference tournaments. Mulvaney is the fifth Bison to earn a spot at this year's national tournament, marking Bucknell's highest number of qualifiers since it sent six in 2016.
The at-large selections are made using the following criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, ratings percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.
Mulvaney, who leads the Bison with a 27-7 record this season, just missed out on a top-five spot and an automatic qualification at the EIWA Championships over the weekend, placing sixth after falling out of the championship bracket with a loss in the 165-pound semifinals. He sat as high as 18th in the NCAA Coaches' Rankings this season and 12th in RPI. The Hartford, Wis. native also ranked as high as 12th in the Intermat national rankings during the season.
Mulvaney went 11-2 in duals during his rookie campaign. He also placed first overall at both the Clarion Open and the Southern Scuffle. Mulvaney was named EIWA Wrestler of the Week back in November after earning his first win over a nationally-ranked wrestler, Columbia's Josh Ogunsanya, en route to his Clarion Open title. Mulvaney's losses at the EIWA Championships were to Army's 17th-ranked Gunner Filipowicz, who Mulvaney beat in the Southern Scuffle title bout, eventual EIWA champion Julian Reamirez of Cornell, who ranks third nationally, and Lehigh's Jake Logan, who is ranked 33rd by Intermat.
Mulvaney is the second Bison in as many years to be selected for an at-large bid following teammate Kurt Phipps' footsteps. Mulvaney was also among nine EIWA wrestlers to be chosen on Tuesday.
Mulvaney will now be headed to Kansas City, Mo. March 21-23, along with Bucknell's automatic qualifiers: Phipps (133), Dylan Chappell (141), Myles Takats (174) and Dorian Crosby (285). With Mulvaney and fellow freshman Takats both earning spots, it marks the first time since 2015 that Bucknell has sent two freshmen to the national tournament.
Seeding and brackets for this year's event will be revealed Wednesday, March 13 during the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Selection Show on NCAA.com at 8 p.m. ET.
