NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Andres Barraza carded a 1-under-par 70 on the way to his second straight top-10 finish, pacing the Bucknell men's golf team on the final day of the Surf Club Invitational. Barraza, who shot 71-67 on Monday, finished with a 5-under 208 and tied for sixth place in a field of 110 players.
As a team, Bucknell's closing 289 was its best of the week. The Bison tied for 15th place with an 880 total. Connecticut ran away with the title, compiling a 27-under 825 over 54 holes. Radford was second at 13-under, followed by Appalachian State at -12 and Butler at -9.
The story of the day for Bucknell was not reflected in its team score, as indie James Robbins fired a 2-under 69. Robbins started his final round on the 14th hole and promptly birdied his first two holes. He then finished his round with four straight birdies, giving him a run of six straight on the scorecard. Robbins also birdied No. 18 and shot a 6-under 29 on the course's back nine.
Barraza made two birdies, one bogey, and 15 pars in his final round. His 5-under total came on the heels of a 10-under performance at the Loyola Invitational. Barraza finished five shots behind co-leaders Addison Beam of Appalachian State and Ray Dennehy of UConn. Beam won the individual title in a playoff. Lewis Wright of LIU was third at -9.
Also for Bucknell on Tuesday, Alex Creamean carded an even-par 71, and Michael Rudnick and James Key both shot 74. Hayden Quinn's 78 was not counted. Lyman Brackett joined Robbins in the unattached groups and finished with a 76.
Next up for the Bison is a trip to the famed Torrey Pines for the UC San Diego Invitational. The three-day tournament runs March 26-28.
