LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell Athletics hosted a National Girls & Women in Sports Day clinic on Saturday with rousing success. Over 100+ participants were on hand to learn and interact with student-athletes from 11 women's programs. The clinic was followed by many attendees watching the Bucknell women's basketball team defeat American University at Sojka Pavilion. The day ended with a postgame autograph session.
National Girls & Women in Sports Day began when President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606, designating February 4, 1987 as the official start. It originally started to honor volleyball player Flo Hyman, who died unexpectedly of Marfan Syndrome during a 1986 tournament in Japan. Over the decades, the day has transformed into a celebration and recognition of women and girls in sports.
The 100+ children ranging from kindergarten to seventh grade progressed from station to station, learning skills from the Cheerleading team, Field Hockey, Women's Golf, Women's Lacrosse, Rowing, Women's Soccer, Softball, Women's Swimming & Diving, Women's Track & Field, Women's Tennis, and Volleyball.
Head women's soccer coach Kelly Cook spearheaded the event at Bucknell and marshaled the hugely exuberant turnout. Her thoughts on the event:
"Our National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic provides an opportunity for our female student-athletes to inspire and empower the rising young athletes in our community. This year's event was a huge success with tons of energy and enthusiasm from all who participated!"
Several student-athletes were also highly impacted by the chance to inspire the next generation. Senior track & field star and holder of several school records, Karen Hull, had this to say, "The event reminded me when I was a little kid, and so excited to meet my idols and inspired me to become them one day, and I just hope that I had the same impact on them as those women athletes had on me."
Sophomore volleyball player and the 2022 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Bri Frazilus offered these thoughts:
"National Girls and Women's Sports Day is a celebration of empowerment, equality, and the endless potential within every young athlete. It was an amazing opportunity to teach volleyball to the next generation. It's less about passing on skills but sharing the valuable lessons of teamwork, perseverance, and self-belief. Reflecting on my journey, I'm reminded of the continuous support of my mom and past female coaches who instilled in me the passion for sports and the belief that gender should never be a barrier to success. It was a pleasure working with those kids and putting a smile on their faces."
