ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's 800 freestyle relay team ended the opening day of the 2024 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships by setting a school record and snagging a bronze medal and the 54 points that come with it. It's Bucknell's third year in a row taking third in the event.
The Bison added a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Bucknell sits in fourth place overall at the meet with 106 points. The Bison trail first-place Navy (120), second-place Loyola (116) and third-place Army (110).
John Gehrig, Shane Wynne, Andy Dorsel and Chris Kopac swam the 800 freestyle relay in 6:30.17 to break the school record. They eclipsed the 2022 record mark of 6:30.50 set at that year's league championships. Gehrig and Kopac were also part of that relay team, and Dorsel and Wynne swam on last year's bronze-medal team that recorded the then-second-best time in program history.
This year's group came in just under a second faster than fourth-place Loyola (6:31.14). The Mids won the event with a 6:23.56, and Army placed second with a 6:24.18.
Bucknell's 200 medley relay team, consisting of Chris Fabian, Noah Basista, Finn Russell and Justin DiSanto just missed out on a medal with their 1:27.71. They trailed third-place Army (1:25.46), second-place Navy (1:25.14), and first-place Loyola (1:24.79). Bucknell's time ranks second in program history behind last year's time at the championship meet.
