NOTE: The next Bucknell Basketball Luncheon will be held on Thursday at noon at the Bull Run Tap House on Market Street in Lewisburg. POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Chance Moore scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead St. Bonaventure to a 64-47 victory over Bucknell in men's basketball action Wednesday evening at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison were led by nine points from Achile Spadone.
Bucknell (4-6) struggled shooting, making just 4 of 20 3-pointers and 7 of 19 from the free-throw line. The Bonnies, now 8-1 and projected to be one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10, opened a 38-16 halftime advantage and never looked back. They stretched their lead to as many as 32 midway through the second half, but the Bucknell fought to the end. The Bison outscored the Bonnies 23-8 over the game's final 10 minutes and got as close as 15.
Pip Ajayi continued his strong play off the bench with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. Josh Bascoe tallied seven points, six rebounds, and six assists.
It was a back-and-forth affair at the start, with five lead changes in the opening five minutes. Spadone's drive for a layup gave Bucknell a 7-6 lead, but center Noel Brown made two straight short jump hooks to ignite a 21-4 St. Bonaventure run. Brown had nine points in that surge, and his free throw gave the Bonnies a 27-11 lead at the 7:11 mark.
St. Bonaventure came into the game ranked 28th nationally and second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense allowing 62.9 ppg while holding foes to 40.0 percent shooting on the season. The Bonnies were relentless defensively for much of the night. The Bison were stuck on 24 points with 10 minutes remaining before nearly doubling that total with 23 in the final 10.
The late-game run started with three transition layups from Bascoe, Ajayi, and Brandon McCreesh. After a 1-for-15 start from 3-point range, Noah Williamson, Ruot Bijiek, and Bascoe all canned threes in the last five minutes.
Bucknell finished at 38.3 percent from the field and was also held back by 18 turnovers. St. Bonaventure shot 44.6 percent overall, 7-for-22 from the arc, and 7-for-11 from the foul line. The Bonnies led 36-31 on the glass.
Next up for Bucknell is a road test at Radford on Sunday at 2 p.m.
