11/13/2024 9:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – After winning twice on the road with fast finishes last week, Bucknell saw the tables turned as Mount St. Mary's fought off a 14-point second-half deficit and went on to defeat the Bison 93-89 in double overtime on Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion. Josh Bascoe led six Bucknell players in double figures with 20 points, while Jedy Cordilia came off the bench to post 22 points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Pip Ajayi's put-back gave the Bison a 63-49 lead with 10:16 left in regulation, but Bucknell (2-2) was held to only two more field goals over the next nine minutes as Mount St. Mary's (2-1) surged ahead with a 22-4 run. After an Elvin Edmonds IV backdoor cut for a layup gave the Bison a 67-58 lead, Dallas Hobbs scored eight straight points, Cordilia put the Mount ahead with a paint jumper, and Xavier Lipscomb knocked down a 3-pointer. The 13 straight points handed the visitors a 71-67 lead with 1:18 to play, but the Bison fought back to force overtime.
Bascoe scored in the lane, and then after a pair of missed free throws, Edmonds drove for a layup to tie the game at 71 with eight seconds left. Lipscomb's three was off the mark at the buzzer, and the Bison headed to an extra session for the second time this season.
Bucknell never led in either of the overtime periods but did fight back from multi-possession deficits in both. Hobbs swished a 28-footer at the end of the shot clock to put the Mount up 78-72 in the first OT period, but Edmonds' free throws with 6.3 seconds left capped a 7-1 run and sent the Bison into a double overtime game for the first time since 2016.
Mount St. Mary's started the second OT with a Carmelo Pacheco 3-pointer and a Terrell Ard Jr. layup, but the Bison tied it on an Achile Spadone transition layup and a Bascoe triple. Cordilia's layup broke an 85-all tie and gave the Mount the lead for good, but the Bison had a possession down 90-89 with in the final 15 seconds.
Bucknell never got a shot, however, as Bascoe seemed to get shoved while trying to set a screen on the perimeter and stumbled into another Mount player resulting in an offensive foul. Lipscomb hit 1 of 2 at the line to make it 91-89 with 8.6 left, and Edmonds' drive and dish into traffic in the lane at the other end was broken up. Abdou Khadre Kebe's free throws with 1.1 to go iced it.
Even though it didn't officially count, these two teams also played a double overtime game last season in Emmitsburg in a charity exhibition to benefit the Behan Strong Foundation.
Bucknell played without wing Ian Motta, who had 18-point games against Delaware and Kentucky last week. All five starters scored in double-figures, and Brandon McCreesh scored 10 first-half points off the bench to give the Bison six double-figure scorers for the first time in two seasons. Edmonds finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Ruot Bijiek added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks before fouling out. Noah Williamson recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks, and Spadone in his first Bucknell start scored 12 points, which was his career high including his two seasons at Davidson.
Hobbs added 19 points and six rebounds for Mount St. Mary's, which flipped an early deficit on the glass. Bucknell built a six-point halftime lead on the strength of a 14-4 edge in second-chance points, but the Mount finished with a 42-38 rebounding edge and limited the Bison to only five more second-chance points the rest of the way.
Bucknell shot 46.7 percent overall but struggled from the 3-point arc (8-31) and the free-throw line (11-18). Mount St. Mary's shot 48.6 percent and went 10-for-30 from downtown and 17-for-28 from the line.
Bucknell returns home on Saturday to face Richmond at noon.
