LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman Clara Renner is off to quite the start to her collegiate swimming career, and on Tuesday she earned her first Patriot League Swimmer of the Week honor.
Renner won three events in Bucknell's quad meet against Navy, American, and Lafayette on Saturday, giving her eight individual event wins in the first three competitions of the season. The Wellesley, Mass., native was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle, the 1000 free, and the 200 butterfly against the three Patriot League rivals on Saturday, which included a Navy squad
The 200 fly was one of the best races of the day. Renner touched in 2:01.65, just .29 seconds ahead of Navy's Caroline Irwin. That duo was five seconds ahead of the rest of the field. It was also a personal best for Renner by nearly two seconds, and she vaulted from ninth to third on Bucknell's all-time list. It was the fastest swim by a Bison that event in five seasons, and Renner is already closing in on Julianna Foss' school record of 2:00.00, set at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
In the 500 free, Renner and Kelly Byrne took the top two spots, and in the 1000 free, Renner and Byrne went 1-3 with Navy's Marin Rose in between.
In addition to her No. 3 time in the 200 fly, Renner also already ranks No. 5 in the 200 free and No. 8 in the 200 individual medley in the Bison record books.
Bucknell defeated American and Lafayette on Saturday while dropping a close meet with Navy. The Bison also have a win over Boston University this season and are now 3-1 in duals. Next up is the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium on Nov. 22-24.
