
Stravrakas Moves on as Men’s Tennis Goes 4-2 on Day 1 of ITA Regionals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Three Bison combined to go 4-2 in singles play, highlighted by a pair of wins from Adam Stavrakas, as qualifying action got underway on Thursday at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament, hosted by Penn.
Stavrakas moves on to the main draw of 64 after beating Lehigh's Jose Murariu 6-3, 6-2 and Drexel's Roman Lafond 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. He will be joined there by teammate Amar Tahirovic, whose ranking earned him a bye into the main draw.
Next up for Stavrakas is Mateo Bivol of Monmouth at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, while Tahirovic will debut against Alexander De Sousa of Drexel at 3 p.m.
Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Brendan McDonald both won their opening matches on Thursday before falling in the second round.
Bain was a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 winner over William Monahan of Villanova. He dropped his second match to Penn's Sanjeev Chundu 7-6, 6-2. McDonald outlasted Hofstra's Enaut Garcia-Beitia 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 before falling to St. John's Ryota Kaneda 6-1, 6-2.
All four Bison will be on the courts in doubles on Friday morning. Bain and Stavrakas will face Loren Byers and David Lindsay of Penn State, while Tahirovic and McDonald will play Kaneda and Adam Groves from St. John's.
