OLEAN, N.Y. – Sophomore Mason Lillis notched his first collegiate goal, but St. Bonaventure scored three times in the first half and added one more in the second on the way to a 4-1 win over visiting Bucknell on Tuesday night. It was the final non-league game of the regular season for the Bison, who fell to 4-6-3 heading into another road game on Sunday at Army West Point.
Bucknell was on the front foot early in this one. The Bison carried most of the possession in the first 15 minutes and nearly scored when Winston Oziri set up Drew Roskos on the half-volley, but the attempt went over the bar.
The Bonnies (6-5-3), who are now 3-0-1 in their last four, caught the Bison on the counter-attack in the 19th minute. Andres Javitt squared a ball into the area, and Umechi Akuazaoku scored on the first touch. Akuazaoku almost had a second a few minutes later but pulled his shot inches wide of the right post, and then St. Bonaventure did find a second in the 26th minute.
Kenzo Brito chipped a ball over the top for Mattia Ferretti, who finished all alone in front of Freddie Lapworth despite pleas for offside from the Bison. The goal was upheld on VAR review.
The Bison pulled one back exactly five minutes later on a well-worked set piece. Kiko Hidalgo's free kick was headed across the six-yard box by Kasper Piela, and Lillis was there for the finish to open his collegiate account. It was also the first career point for Hidalgo with the assist.
Will O'Connor retaliated for St. Bonaventure in the 39th minute, scoring from space in the right side of the area after being played through by Callum Shillington.
St. Bonaventure had a goal ruled out on an offside call, with VAR confirming, in the 57th minute, and then Lapworth made his best save of the night on Rashid Aroza, diving to his right to palm aside a low drive.
The Bonnies' tacked on an insurance goal in the 69th minute. Bison defender Ben Sheffield saved one shot off the goal line, but Neshawn Sullivan knocked in the rebound for a 4-1 lead.
The Bison played to the final whistle and generated some quality scoring chances late in the match. Lillis was robbed of a second goal on a terrific save from Ben Choudhry, who later denied both Zane Domsohn and Mat McLeod from close range in the final seconds.
The Bonnies finished with a 12-9 shot advantage, with both keepers making four saves.
The Bison have nothing but Patriot League fixtures remaining on the schedule, and their four-game road stretch wraps up on Sunday with a trip to West Point. Bucknell enters round six of Patriot League play with eight points, good for a three-way tie for second place. Lehigh is alone at the top with 10 points, followed by Bucknell, Colgate, and Boston University with eight and then four others with seven.
