Women’s Soccer Blanks Navy, Takes Over Sole Possession of Patriot League Lead
10/11/2024 9:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Teresa Deda's first-half rocket and another stout defensive effort lifted the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Navy on Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. With the win, the Bison broke a first-place tie with Army West Point, which fell 3-0 at Loyola on Friday.
Bucknell improved to 8-3-2 on the season and 4-1 in the Patriot League, and the Bison now lead Army (3-2) by three points and Boston University (2-0-2) by four. The Terriers play at Lafayette on Saturday. Navy fell to 8-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play, and the Mids remain in a tie for fourth place with Holy Cross and Lafayette on seven points.
The Bison controlled the action right from the start in this one, with Reese Evans putting two shots on goal in the first four minutes of the match. Bucknell turned back almost every Navy venture into the attacking third, and the Bison finished with a 15-7 edge in shots, including a 7-2 margin in shots on target. The Mids came into the night as the league's highest scoring team at 2.2 goals per game, but that lockdown defense helped Bucknell join Ohio State, Temple, Maryland, and Colgate as the only teams to shut out Navy this season.
"I'm so proud of the whole group, they came out with so much energy and kept it up for 90 minutes," said head coach Kelly Cook. "It was a gritty, scrappy performance and the team showed a ton of fight. Navy is a good, hard-working team and their goalkeeper made some great saves to keep them in it. I was pleased with the chances we were able to create, and hopefully we are starting to build some momentum."
Deda's goal came just before the half-hour mark. Katie Connell, who was a menace all night on the right wing, received a pass from center back Julia Palitti and turned on her defender to clear space. Connell picked out Deda, who took the ball to the top of the D and unleashed a left-footed rocket to the top right corner for her seventh tally of the season and 20th of her career.
The Bison almost had a second goal as the final ticks of the first-half clock expired. Evans tracked down a long free kick on the left edge of the area and squared a pass to Presley Sutter flashing to the near post, but Navy goalkeeper Natasha Stamrood made a good save on Sutter's redirect.
Katie Schiano made an overlapping run in the 51st minute and saw a good look from deep into the box palmed aside by Stamrood. In the 62nd minute, Connell made a sweet little chip over the back line to Kelley Francis, whose header had to be tipped out by Stamrood. Francis then fired over the bar on the ensuing corner kick.
Navy's best look of the night came just past the hour mark. After a long free kick, Alexa Riddle collected and fired a shot off the left post. The Mids applied some late pressure, but Katie Schiano and the Bison back wall broke up a number of crosses. Schiano blocked a shot in the 87th minute, and then Lucy Gaines popped a tricky ball toward the goal that a backpedaling Jess Benattar had to tip into the crossbar.
The game fittingly ended with Deda dribbling out the clock through the center of the park, and the Bison defeated Navy for the fourth time in the last five meetings.
Next up for the Bison is a home date with Loyola, which sits in seventh place in the table at 1-1-3 but will be feeling good after Friday's rout of Army. The Greyhounds feature the Patriot League's top scorer in Baylee DeSmit, who scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season in the win over the Black Knights.

Here's the Teresa Deda goal! Great turn by Katie Connell who finds T with space to shoot at the top of the D. #rayBucknell
