1/17/2024 9:23:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BOSTON, Mass. – Jack Forrest scored 26 points and Elvin Edmonds IV just missed a triple-double with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists to lead Bucknell to a 73-57 road win over Boston University on Wednesday night at Case Gym. The Bison improved to 3-2 in Patriot League play and 2-0 on the road heading into another tough road trip to 5-0 Lafayette on Saturday.
Noah Williamson added 13 points and eight rebounds, Ruot Bijiek had 12 points, and Ian Motta added eight more off the bench, including a dagger 3-pointer with 3:37 to go. Anthony Morales scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half for Boston University, which fell to 2-3 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell led by 13 at halftime and extended the gap to 20 just over six minutes into the second half. Bijiek beat the shot-clock buzzer to make it 49-29 with 13:31 remaining, but the Terriers made things interesting as Morales got hot. He scored 24 points as Boston University rallied from 18 down to beat Loyola on Saturday, and this time he canned four second-half threes, the last of which made it a 56-50 game with 4:44 left.
It was still a six-point margin at 58-52 after a Miles Brewster layup, but the Bison outscored the Terriers 15-5 the rest of the way. Edmonds made both ends of a 1-and-1, and then after Morales finally missed from deep, Forrest fed Motta for a left-wing 3-pointer to shove the lead back to 11 at 63-52.
Motta scored again off an Edmonds feed, Williamson converted off an inbounds play, and then Bucknell went 6-for-6 at the foul line in the final 1:05 to ice it. The Patriot League's top free-throw shooting team was 13-for-13 on the night, while Boston University missed two critical front ends of 1-and-1s and was just 1-for-4 in the final 2:21.
Edmonds' night was even more critical as backcourt mate Josh Bascoe was limited to only 4:31 of action before leaving the game with an injury. Edmonds picked up his third foul late in the first half and his fourth with 5:19 still to play, but he managed to avoid disqualification and record his first career double-double in 38 minutes of action.
Motta went 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-3 from the arc to spearhead an important night for the bench crew. Motta, Josh Adoh, Pip Ajayi, and Brandon McCreesh all grabbed at least three rebounds and contributed to an outstanding defensive showing as the Terriers were held to 35.6 percent shooting on the night.
"When Josh Bascoe went down, there was an opportunity for others to step up, and we got contributions from everyone up and down the lineup in timely spots," said head coach John Griffin III. "Winning on the road in the league is really difficult, and we've done it twice now by getting big minutes from a lot of different guys. That's what we're going to need as we move ahead in the Patriot League."
Bucknell led by as many as 17 points in the first half and took a 33-20 lead to the locker room. An active zone defense harassed the Terriers into 0-for-13 shooting from the 3-point arc, and the Bison led for the entirety of the opening stanza after Bijiek opened the scoring with an early 3-pointer.
Forrest's runner in the lane gave the Bison a 20-10 lead. Edmonds scored Bucknell's next eight in a row, and later a layup and a 3-point play by Forrest made it a 33-16 lead with 2:17 to go.
Forrest, the Patriot League's scoring leader, fell one shy of his career high with his 26 points. He finished 10-for-17 from the field, 2-for-6 from the arc and 4-for-4 from the foul line, and he added six rebounds and four assists.
Now 6-12 overall, Bucknell shot 52.0 percent in the second half and 46.4 percent overall. After conceding a handful of offensive rebounds early in the game, the Bison rallied to win the glass battle 41-30.
The Bison just kicked off a stretch of five games out of seven away from home, and they will be back on the road on Saturday to face Lafayette at 2 p.m. The Leopards are the Patriot League's only 5-0 team after winning at Holy Cross on Wednesday night.

HUGE triple by Ian Motta gives the Bison a 63-52 lead just moments after the Terriers had cut it to 6. #rayBucknell
