HAMILTON, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (3-12, 0-4 Patriot League) lost 71-46 to the league-leading Colgate Raiders (11-4, 4-0 Patriot League) Saturday afternoon. Bucknell never led in the game. The contest was 16-12 Colgate after the first quarter, but a 24-12 second period for the Raiders essentially sealed the game for the hometown team. The Bison continued to battle but could not overcome the deficit.
Ashley Sofilkanich continued her impressive growth, leading the Orange & Blue with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Emma Theodorsson continued her streak of double-digit scoring with 12 points.
Taylor Golembiewski and Madison Schiller each scored 14 points to lead the Raiders. Ella Meabon added 12 points.
Colgate shot 8-of-13 (61.5%) from three-point land and was 6-of-6 in the second quarter. The Bison were 0-of-8 from deep, which proved the difference.
The first seven minutes were a pitched battle. Colgate would lead by two points, and Bucknell would tie the game five times (2-2, 4-4, 6-6, 8-8, and 10-10). Colgate finally squeezed ahead by four points (14-10). The Bison cut the deficit by half on two Isabella King free throws. However, Colgate scored a buzzer-beater shot for a 16-12 lead. It would prove ominous for Bucknell's fortunes.
Ashley Sofilkanich tallied a basket to start the second quarter for a 16-14 score. The Bison would not get closer. The Raiders launched a 13-0 run that effectively handed the Hamilton team the contest. A King layup ended the streak, but the damage was done. The Bison offense could not keep pace with Colgate's deadly three-point shooting (6-of-6). The last trey arrived 43 seconds before halftime for the 40-24 situation.
Colgate continued its progress after halftime. Each Bucknell basket was answered, and the Bison could never put together a run. The Raiders expanded its lead into the 20+ territory. The Orange & Blue made it 49-31, but Colgate ended the quarter on a 9-2 run.
The final quarter was played on even terms, with both teams scoring 13 points. Sofilkanich provided seven points, and Blake Matthews chipped in four. Bucknell tried several different sets and combinations. Ashley O'Connor completed the scoring with a sweet jumper with three seconds remaining to seal the game at 71-46.
