Volleyball Sweeps Cornell and Falls to Princeton to End Bucknell Invitational
9/2/2023 4:24:00 PM | Volleyball
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team swept the Cornell Big Red (25-22, 25-22, 26-24) at Davis Gym on the second day of the Bucknell Invitational. Catherine Jamison led both teams with 17 kills, while teammate Tijana Kostic added 12 kills on a pristine .409 hitting percentage. Bucknell dominated on the statsheet picking up 49 kills to Cornell's 34 and 61 digs to the Big Red's 42. It was Bucknell's first win against Cornell since 2013 and the first sweep for the Bison since the Sept. 24, 2022 victory over Holy Cross.Â
The Bison finished the Bucknell Invitational by losing to Ivy League power Princeton in straight sets (18-25, 20-25, 11-25). Bucknell fought gamely but the veteran-laded and experienced Tigers proved too much for the Orange & Blue despite Jordan Hardy's 22 digs.Â
Cornell Recap
The first set appropriately set the tone for the match, as it was a close, tightly-fought affair. Both sides battled to a 10-10 tie before Cornell twice went on two 3-0 runs while the Bison could only muster a single tally. The Orange & Blue responded with 3-0 stretches, while Cornell only managed a single point. With the score knotted at 17-17, the Bison undertook a 5-2 run boosted by three kills and two service errors. Two more kills by Jamison gave Bucknell a 24-20 advantage. Cornell managed two points before Jamison added another kill to win the set for the Lewisburg host.Â
Â
The early part of the second set mainly contained alternating 3-0 runs as Bucknell pushed out to a 10-7 lead. The Big Red battled back to tie the set at 12-12. Bucknell used a 4-1 run with back-and-forth kills by Jamison and Cameron Lloyd to squeeze ahead. Cornell responded with an 8-3 run to take a 21-13 lead. A Cornell attack error, a Laura Caro kill, and a Big Red kill deadlocked the score at 22-22. Then Jamison ended the drama with two straight kills and a block to seal the 25-22 set win.Â
Â
Set three launched to an inauspicious start for Bucknell. Cornell raced out to a 7-2 lead before Bucknell wisely called timeout. The momentum immediately sided with the Bison, as the team embarked on a 10-2 run. Both teams spent the teens battling back and forth until the score was tied at 20-20. Events did not look promising for the Bison as Cornell grabbed leads of 22-20 and 24-20 and was posed to seize the set point. Then Cornell committed an attack error: 24-23. A Kostic kill followed: 24-24. A laser serve from the Preseason Libero of the Year Jordan Hardy netted a service ace and a 25-24 Bison lead. A final Kostic kill made it 26-24, giving Bucknell the set and the match.Â

The Tigers won 20+ games in 2023 but the Bison kept with the Tigers from the opening serve. The teams battled to a 9-9 draw before Princeton drew ahead by two points. Bucknell proved equal to the task of tying up the game. Princeton, showing veteran composure, undertook a 4-0 run, granting the Tigers a lead that would hold up. The Bison clawed back to within 22-18 before the Tigers used a 3-0 run to end the set.Â
Princeton started the second set by leaping out to a 4-1 lead. Bucknell called timeout and roared back to grab a 7-5 advantage. The squads traded points until Princeton seized a slim 13-12 lead. Bucknell used a 3-0 rally to take the lead. It would be the last time the Bison were ahead. Bucknell did tie it back up at 19-19. The Tigers then used a 6-1 run to grab the lead and the set.Â
The third period was all Princeton from the first serve. The Tigers quickly grabbed a 7-1 lead. Bucknell's timeout did not stem the tide as Princeton went on a 10-4 run. But the Bison did not quit fighting. With the score at 24-8, Bucknell reeled off a 3-0 run until a final Princeton kill ended the set and match.Â
