7/6/2023 11:59:00 AM | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell field hockey team announced the release of its 2023 schedule on Thursday. The Bison will compete in 17 regular season games. Ten games will be on the road, with seven home games. Six of the contests will count as conference games. Bucknell seeks to improve its record from 2022, which saw the Bison go 5-13 overall and 3-3 in Patriot League play.Â
"We are very excited for our upcoming season," said head coach Kelsey Kolojejchick. "We are looking forward to this challenging journey, setting our sites on a successful season. This team is determined to put into action all the hard work they have embraced this off-season, and I can't wait to see what this team is truly capable of this year. We hope the Bucknell community comes out to support us all season long!"
The Orange & Blue open the season with four road games against Drexel, Temple, Ball State, and Ohio State. The 2023 campaign commences against Drexel on August 25. The Bison are 10-19-1 all-time against the Philly school. Bucknell lost 3-0 to Drexel last season. The team stays in the City of Brotherly Love for an August 27 matchup against Temple. Bucknell is historically 4-6 against the Owls. The Bison fell 5-2 in 2022 in a home matchup versus Temple. On Sept. 1, the Bison will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the first of two games against Midwestern teams. Ball State is the first opponent. It is the first time since 2008 that the two programs have met. Bucknell won that game 4-2. The Orange & Blue will duel the Buckeyes of Ohio State two days later. Ohio State leads the series 2-0.Â
The Bison commences home play with two games. The first matchup will be on Sept. 8 against Towson. It is a renewal of a series in which Bucknell leads 20-10 overall. Kent State comes to Lewisburg two days later. Bucknell narrowly fell 3-2 to the Golden Flashes last season. The Bison are 1-4-1 in the series.Â
Conference play opens on Sept. 15 with a road rivalry against Lafayette. Bucknell clinched a 2-1 victory over the Leopards in 2022 but still trails the all-time series 17-40-1. The Bison stay on the road two days later to face Penn State in the Route 45 Rivalry. Bucknell lost to #4 Penn State last season in a 4-0 game. Bucknell has never beaten the Nittany Lions, despite some close contests.Â
Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 will witness two home games for the Bison. NEC foe Wagner comes into town on the former day. It is the first-ever matchup against the Seahawks. A more familiar foe in Holy Cross arrives the next day for a pivotal Patriot League bout. Bucknell vanquished the Crusaders 3-1 in 2022. Holy Cross leads the series 20-17.Â
The squad ships up to Massachusetts the following weekend for two games. The team concludes September with a showdown against perennial Patriot League powerhouse Boston on the 30th. Boston beat Bucknell twice in 2022, 2-1 to end the year and 1-0 in the Patriot League Tournament. Boston leads the all-time series 13-4. Another new nonconference foe graces the Bison schedule in UMass Lowell. The River Hawks and the Bison will tangle for the first time on Oct. 1.Â
The following weekend will only have one game for the Bison: a conference matchup at American on Oct. 7. Bucknell lost 3-2 at home in 2022 against American and trails 9-20 in the all-time series.Â
Bucknell will host MAC foe Miami of Ohio on Oct. 15. It is another first-time opponent for the Bison.Â
On Oct. 20, Bucknell hosts Lehigh for a game that should determine Patriot League Tournament seeding. The Bison lost 3-2 in overtime last season to the Mountain Hawks. The all-time series is deadlocked at 24-24-1.Â
The final non-conference game of the 2023 campaign comes on Oct. 24 against Lock Haven. Bucknell won 3-2 in 2022 but Lock Haven holds a 27-12-1 advantage in the series.Â
The regular season concludes with a Patriot Game contest at home against Colgate on Oct. 28. Bucknell won 5-3 in Hamilton last season and holds a decisive 37-11-3 series record against the Raiders.Â
