LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior defender Ella Payer and junior midfielder Emily Baird were named to the Academic All-Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Team on Wednesday. This is Payer's second year in a row on the 12-player squad, while Baird is honored for the first time.
Payer joins Katelyn Miller (2012-14), Eve Lukowski (2016-19), and Jessie Britton (2018-19) on the list of Bison who have made multiple appearances on the All-Academic Team, which originated in 2011.
Baird and Payer both carry identical 3.84 cumulative grade-point averages. Payer will graduate in two weeks with a degree in markets, innovation, and design, while Baird is a biomedical engineering major who is also pursuing a career in finance.
Earlier this week, Payer earned First Team All-Patriot League honors as a defender. It was her third straight all-conference citation and her first time on the First Team. A stalwart in the defensive end and on the draw circle, she is currently the only Patriot League player ranking in the top 10 in the league in ground balls (2nd 2.47), caused turnovers (2nd, 1.67), and draw controls (5th, 5.20) per game.
Payer will graduate as Bucknell's career (197) and single-game (15) leader in draw controls, and she holds two of the top five single-season totals in team history.
Off the field, Payer is a Dean's List student in the Freeman College of Management. In addition to her markets, innovation, and design major, she has a concentration in women's studies and a minor in environmental studies. She was selected to be an Igniting Leader in the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute, and last fall she worked as an Inclusion, Diversity & Belonging intern with Marsh McLennan. Payer was also a global marketing intern for Tory Burch Fragrance in New York City, a prestigious post from which she was selected from more than 1,000 applicants.
Baird made an impact all over the field for the Bison in 2023. Offensively, she set career highs with 22 goals, eight assists, and 30 points. She logged four-goal games against Lehigh, Marist, and Robert Morris and tallied three goals and an assist against Lafayette. Baird also leads the league and ranks 25th nationally in caused turnovers per game (1.88), and she ranks seventh in the league in ground balls per game (2.47).
Baird is a Dean's List student in Bucknell's biomedical engineering program. She is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, the Society of Women Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and she has volunteered with Bucknell's E-Nable Club, which uses 3D printers to make prosthetics for those in need. Baird also has an interest in finance, is a member of the Bison Finance Society, and will be working in investment banking this summer.
Patriot League regular-season champion Loyola garnered three members of the Academic All-Patriot League Team, including Scholar-Athlete of the Year Katie Detwiler. Bucknell was the only other team to receive multiple selections, while American, Army, Boston University, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, and Navy picked up one each.
