LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team received some more scholar-athlete honors on Tuesday, as Chris Klein, Sean Keys, Ben Magovern, and Connor Vucovich were all named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.
The CSC Academic All-District honorees now move on to the national Academic All-America ballot. In order to be eligible, candidates must have completed at least one full year at their current institution, they must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's competitions, and they must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or better.
This is the second scholar-athlete honor in as many weeks for Keys, who was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Keys, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.69 cumulative grade-point average, is the First Team All-Patriot League third baseman in 2023. A three-time Patriot League Player of the Week this spring, Keys is slashing .329/.431/.652 on the season, and he ranks in the top-10 in the Patriot League in eight different offensive categories, including fourth in home runs (12), third in RBIs (56), third in slugging percentage, fourth in OPS (1.070), and seventh in batting average.
He ranks sixth on Bucknell's single-season charts in both homers and RBIs, and he has reached base via hit or walk in 42 of the 45 games this season. His 12 long balls are the most by a Bison since Doug Shribman had 16 in 2011, and his homer tally includes a walk-off three-run shot in a home win over Lehigh and a go-head three-run blast in the top of the ninth in the win at Penn State.
Klein has enjoyed a stellar senior season, his first as a regular in the Bison lineup. Typically the designated hitter against right-handed pitching, Klein his hitting a robust .361 on the season with six doubles and seven RBIs in 22 starts. Off the field, Klein is a political science major with a 3.89 GPA.
Magovern and Vucovich are both lefthanded pitchers for the Bison. Magovern has made 11 appearances with six starts this season and is 2-2 with a 5.91 earned-run average. Both of his wins came against Navy, one at home and one away. Both were strong seven-inning stints, the latter coming in a critical 5-1 Bucknell win on Apr. 19 that clinched the season series and allowed the Bison to host the Midshipmen in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals last weekend. Magovern, a sophomore, is studying in the Freeman College of Management and carries a 3.68 GPA.
Vucovich is a computer science and engineering major with a gaudy 3.97 GPA. The junior has made 11 appearances in relief this spring and has a 4.76 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched.
Bucknell swept the semifinal series from Navy at Depew Field and now heads to West Point to play top-seeded Army in a best-of-three Patriot League championship series this weekend. The games are slated for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (if necessary), with first pitch set for 1 p.m. each day.
