RESULTS
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Freshman Paige Richter made two late birdies at holes 16 and 17 to post a 1-over-par 73 and lead the Bucknell women's golf team to a 307 team score on Day 1 of the 2023 Patriot League Championship, hosted by Richmond at Independence Golf Course. The Bison are in fifth place but just three shots out of third with 36 holes still to play.
Richmond, an associate member of the Patriot League in women's golf, leads the six-team field after compiling a 5-over 293 on Friday. Lehigh is in second place, five strokes back, followed by defending champion Boston University (304), Navy (306), Bucknell, and Holy Cross (320).
For the Bison, the 307 team composite was their best of the spring season by 10 strokes, as four of their six players carded scores in the 70s. In addition to Richter's 73, Viveka Kurup shot 77, Morgan Sohosky tallied a 78, and Tatum McKelvey posted a 79.
Richter, who shot 72-74 en route to a fourth-place finish at the Navy Spring Invitational last weekend, started off with bogeys at holes 1 and 3, but then played the final 16 holes in 1-under. She birdied the par-5 eighth hole, and then bounced back nicely from bogeys at 11 and 12 with three straight pars followed by the birdies at 16 and 17.
The par-5 17th hole was a good one for the Bison, as Richter, Sohosky, Kurup, and Cristina Canales all made 4 there.
Kurup built some momentum with a strong finish to her first career Patriot League Tournament round. Sitting at 7-over through 11 holes, she played the final seven in 2-under with birdies at 13 and 17 to shoot her best score of the spring season.
Richter is very much in contention on the individual leaderboard, sitting in a two-way tie for third place behind only two Richmond players. Rory Weinfurther fired a 1-under 71 and teammate Olivia Wilkie followed with a 72. Richter and Lehigh's Madison Pineda both shot 73, but a host of players are lingering only a handful of strokes behind.
The second round gets going at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday. The Bison will be paired with Navy and Holy Cross in the early wave.
