Bison Baseball Turns in Sharp Performance in 5-1 Win over Navy

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Ben Magovern pitched seven strong innings and was backed up by a sharp defensive effort, and Grant Voytovich and Tyler Dunn carried the bulk of the offensive load in Bucknell's 5-1 win over Navy on Wednesday at sunny Depew Field.
The Bison (16-20, 9-10 PL) snapped a six-game losing streak and took the season series from Navy (20-18, 12-7 PL) three games to two. The win also moved Bucknell back into third place in the Patriot League standings, percentage points ahead of Lafayette.
Voytovich went 4-for-4 for his third four-hit game of the month and lifted his season average to .300. Dunn was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, and it was his two-run single that sparked Bucknell's four-run bottom of the first inning.
Six straight Bison reached base in that decisive opening inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Dunn laced a hard ground ball back through the middle to make it 2-0. Billy Kender's infield hit re-loaded the bases, and then Chris Klein hit another shot through the box to score two more runs.
Magovern (2-2) dealt with some traffic on the bases in the early innings but stranded six runners on base through the first four innings. He got better as the game went along, and his only blemish was an Alex Smith solo home run with two outs in the fifth.
Bucknell got that run back in the bottom of the inning, and again it was Voytovich and Dunn in the middle of the rally. Voytovich led off the inning with a two-strike single the opposite way. One out later he stole his second bag of the game, and Dunn greeted reliever Reece Early with another RBI single up the middle.
Magovern started the seventh inning on 101 pitches and worked a quick 1-2-3 frame on only 10 pitches. He allowed only a run on five hits, striking out three while walking two in his best start of the season.
Theo Farynick retired the side in order in the eighth, and Ryan Osinski retired three straight after a hit batsman in the ninth.
All three Bison pitchers benefitted from stellar defense. Right-fielder Voytovich made the play of the day with a diving catch in foul territory to end Eduardo Diaz's at-bat in the fifth. That came one batter after third-baseman Sean Keys made a leaping catch on Nick Burch's sharp line drive.
Catcher Nic Adamo ended the eighth with a terrific play on a third strike that got away. Farynick fanned Kyle Rausch on a breaking ball in the dirt, but the ball caromed near the on-deck circle on the third-base side. With his momentum going away from first base, Adamo pounced on the loose ball and threw from his knees to retire Rausch for the final out of the inning.
Navy starter Liam Golden (2-3) worked 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
Kender and Klein added two hits each for the Bison, who logged 12 hits in the game against three Navy pitchers.
Bucknell now heads to Lehigh for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The Mountain Hawks are suddenly red-hot with five straight wins on the heels of a 2-12 stretch. The Bison swept a doubleheader from Lehigh at Depew Field on March 26.

Grant Voytovich with a web gem in the 5th! He ran a mile into foul territory and went full extension for a great catch. #rayBucknell #PLTop3
