PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Darren Miller (141) and Dylan Chappell (149) both advanced to the semifinals, while three more are still alive in the consolation bracket and will earn spots on the podium, as Bucknell concluded the first day of the 2023 EIWA Championships at The Palestra on Saturday.
Kurt Phipps (133) and Dorian Crosby (285) also won round-of-16 matchups and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the consolation brackets, while Nick Delp went 2-1 during the opening day as well. Chappell and Crosby both put on a show with wins by sudden victory.
This is the second straight year Miller has reached the semis. He defeated No. 15 seed Ian Oswalt of Brown with a 3-0 decision and then won by a 6-2 decision against seventh-seeded Julian Sanchez of Army in the quarterfinals to put himself one win away from reaching his first EIWA championship bout. Miller will face sixth-seeded Carmen Ferrante of Penn in the semifinal round on Sunday.
Chappell, who made his EIWA Championships debut on Saturday, reached the semifinals with a dramatic 8-6 win over fourth-seeded Trae McDaniel of Army. Chappell scored a takedown 17 seconds into the extra period for the victory. He previously posted Bucknell's only pin of the day in a win over No. 12 seed Bryce Kresho from Franklin & Marshall in the round of 16.

Chappell will face Penn's top-seeded Doug Zapf in the semifinals.
Phipps reached the quarterfinals with a 3-0 decision over Sacred Heart's Andrew Fallon and held an early 2-0 lead over No. 6 seed Angelo Rini of Columbia in the next round, but a 5-1 run by Rini dropped Phipps to the consolations. He went on to defeat ninth-seeded Pat Phillips in the blood round.
Delp bounced back from a narrow 9-6 loss to Harvard's Trevor Tarsi in the round of 16 by blanking his Binghamton opponent in the first consolation round of eight and then edging fourth-seeded Andrew Cerniglia of Navy 5-3. Delp sat tied with the two-time NCAA qualifying Midshipmen at 3-3 and needing to make up riding time early in the third period before logging a takedown with just a minute to go to hold on.
Crosby ended the night with fireworks, as he defeated No. 8 seed Zachary Knighton-Ward with a sudden victory takedown. Knighton-Ward had tied the match at 9-9 with 20 seconds left in the third as the heavyweights went back and forth throughout the bout. It was Crosby's second win over Knighton-Ward, who was ranked No. 30 in the country during their first meeting. Crosby also won 5-2 over No. 11 seed William Jarrell of American before dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to third-seeded Cory Day of Binghamton in the quarterfinals.
