LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell Bison men's track & field senior Samuel Whittaker was named Bison of the Week on Monday after setting the school record in the 3000 Meter Run at the Scarlet & White Invite hosted by Boston University. This is the second time in the academic year that Whittaker received the honor. He earned it on September 12 for his cross-country exploits at the Siena Invite.
Whittaker placed second in the event, and his time of 8:02.55 set the best mark in Bucknell history. It is now the fastest time by 2.49 seconds. The previous record of 8:05.04 was set by Brian Harshman back in 1985 and was one of the oldest indoor track & field records. Furthermore, the time also qualified Whittaker for the IC4A.
Whittaker's record-setting performance is even more impressive as Brian Harshman is enshrined in the Bucknell Hall of Fame. Harshman's mark lasted 38
years before being broken by Whittaker, a testament to the skills of both runners.
The new record adds to Whittaker's already successful 2022-23 indoor season. At the PSU Invite, he ran a 4:05.35 in the Mile Run to grab third all-time in Bucknell history. He has earned IC4A qualifications in the 3000 Meter and Mile Run events.
Whittaker and the Bison return to action at the Big Apple Classic on Feb. 11.
