LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell Golf Club, home to the Bison men's and women's golf teams, was recently ranked as the third-best college golf course in the country, according to an NBC Golf Pass survey.
The Bucknell Golf Club was listed behind only the Ackerman-Allen at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex at Purdue, and the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. Out of 65 reviews, the BGC received 47 five-star and 16 four-star ratings.
Conveniently located along the western edge of the Bucknell campus, the Bucknell Golf Club is a semi-private club, with tee times available for both members and the general public. The historic track was designed in 1930 by Emil Loeffler, a professional golfer who was also the course superintendent and head professional at the famed Oakmont Country Club. As an homage to Loeffler's ties to Oakmont, replicas of that course's famed "church pew" bunkers were placed on holes 3 and 15 at the Bucknell Golf Club in recent years.
The course's original nine-hole layout was significantly redesigned in 1947 and then expanded to 18 holes in 1964. A practice range was constructed in 1987, and three years later the clubhouse was renovated with new men's and women's locker rooms, an updated pro shop, and a new dining room and kitchen. The restaurant – now called the 1846 Grill – was remodeled along with the addition of a full bar in 2021.
The Bucknell men's and women's golf teams have daily access to the golf course, and both teams host collegiate invitationals during the fall season. Eight Patriot League Championships have been contested at the Bucknell Golf Club, in addition to a number of U.S. Open Local Qualifiers and other regional tournaments.
The Bucknell student-athletes' practice opportunities were greatly expanded in 2011 with the construction of the Bachman Golf Center. Located next to the public practice range and adjacent to the 11th hole, the Bachman Golf Center houses coaches' offices and team locker rooms, indoor hitting bays and putting green, video simulators with diagnostic technology, outdoor short-game areas, and a private range.
"Having such a wonderful golf course in close proximity to campus and to our practice facility is very convenient for our student-athletes," said head women's golf coach Laura Tyler-Cook. "It allows them to maximize their time on the course around their busy academic schedules. It's a very well-groomed golf course, and to have it be ranked as the third-best college course in the country is very impressive. It is great to be able to talk to a recruit and tell them they can come to Bucknell, and along with the many other things that make the university so special, they will have the opportunity to play every day on a top-three college golf course."
"The Bucknell Golf Club is a really neat course that incorporates some of the neighborhoods here in Lewisburg," said head men's coach Michael Binney. "While the course doesn't play as long as some of the others we see throughout the season, it rarely gives up low scores because it's so well-protected. For our team, it is awesome for us to have a first-class golf course right across the street from campus. There are lots of great college golf courses around the country, but when you combine the quality and condition of our course, along with the Bachman Center and the proximity to campus, it all adds up to a great situation for our guys."
The Bucknell women's golf team opens up its spring season on Sunday at Lipscomb's three-day Lady Bison Bay Point Classic in Panama City, Fla. The men's squad makes its 2023 debut at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley GC in Goodyear, Ariz., starting on Feb. 26.
