Wrestling Falls to Princeton at Home, 22-12, in Final Dual Match

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Darren Miller pinned Princeton's Chris Martino in the first period of his final bout at Davis Gym Friday, highlighting a Senior Night effort, but the Tigers ultimately prevailed 22-12 in Bucknell's last dual of the season.
Fellow seniors Sam Barnes, Mason McCready and Luke Niemeyer put up solid efforts as well, while Vincent Andreano and Chris Lanciano were also recognized prior to the event.
Bucknell's Kurt Phipps (133) and Nolan Springer (197) also won their respective bouts. Princeton, which finished third at last year's EIWA Championships and took 16th at the NCAAs, scored bonus points with a major decision in the 165-pound bout to take a 13-9 lead and would end the dual on a 19-3 run after Bucknell held an early 9-3 edge.
Miller's fall was his third of the season as he reached 61 career wins and 28 dual wins with the victory over Martino, pinning the rookie 1:49 into the bout.
Kurt Phipps was the first Bison to add points to the board, defeating Anthony Clark 4-0 in the second bout of the evening to even things up at 3-3. After a scoreless first period, Phipps posted a second-period escape and followed it up with a quick takedown before racking up 3:29 of riding time. He now boasts a team-best 28 wins on the season and is 9-1 in EIWA action.
Springer blanked his opponent, Aidan Connor, 6-0 with a pair of takedowns and nearly three minutes of riding time.
Two of Princeton's wins were decided by a single point, as Dylan Chappell narrowly fell 5-4 to Marshall Kelly at 149 following a last-minute escape by the Tiger, and Nick Delp was edged 6-5 by Ty Whalen thanks to the riding time point.
Niemeyer also provided late drama, forcing overtime against No. 30 Travis Stefanik. The two sat tied at 1-1 at the end of three periods, but Stefanik secured the sudden victory with a takedown 45 seconds into the extra period.
Bucknell is off for the next two weeks before attending the 2023 EIWA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5.
