LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team announced its latest recruiting class on Sunday. Head coach Trevor Woodruff's program added four exciting and dynamic players to the future 2024-25 roster.
"We couldn't be more excited about this group," said Woodruff. "They reflect our core values of being Tough, Smart and Together (TST). They possess excellent overall length, positional flexibility, scoring ability, and basketball IQ. They are high-level passers and proven winners. We can't wait for them to integrate with our young and talented core."
Guard/Forward Desirae Ashton commits to the Bison from historic Fredericksburg, Virginia. The hybrid player competed for Bishop Ireton High School and played for Team Durant 16U and 17U in the EYBL. She averaged 5.1 PPG during 2021-22. Her father, Delonte, played collegiate football at Bridgewater and Norfolk State. Ashton has displayed great tenacity in overcoming two blood diseases and torn ACLs. She is fully healthy and ready to play for the Bison.
Woodruff on Ashton: "She is a versatile player who could play as many as three positions for us over her career. She brings a tough, aggressive style to the defense end and a willingness to compete on every possession. She has shown the ability to score in multiple ways and is willing to fill any role that the team needs. I envision her becoming one of the elite defenders in the PL and an efficient offensive weapon."
Combo Guard Hope Masonius comes to Bucknell from the charming hamlet of Spring Lake, New Jersey. She plays for Manasquan High School and the club squad New Jersey RISE. Her team has seen success by winning the 2022 State and Section Titles. Masonius received All-Conference honors during her junior year. She was named to the 2022 All-Tournament Team for the Christmas Tournament. Masonius collected over 1,000 points in middle school. She comes from a numerous (nine siblings) and athletic family. Her father played lacrosse at Mount St. Mary's, her mother was on St. Joseph's basketball, her sister played basketball for Wagner, another sister is currently on the Maryland women's basketball team, and her brother Joseph was on UConn's hockey team. Masonius plays to study biology and attend medical school.
Woodruff on Masonius: "She will make an immediate impact at both the point and off-guard positions. Her toughness, basketball IQ, and 'just-win' attitude make her a perfect fit for us. She has a positive presence about her that impacts every room she enters and has natural leadership abilities. She is equally comfortable as a scorer or playmaker for others."
Shooting Guard/Forward Elana Weisman ventures to Lewisburg from Burlingame, California. She plays for Archbishop Mitty High School and has lettered all participating years. Weisman was named CCS First Team All-League and SF Chronicle All-Metro in 2021-2022. Her 2022-23 team racked up the honors in 2022-23: they were state champions, NorCal Open Regional Champions, and runners-up for the CIF State Title Open Division Championship. Weisman played for two Jason Kidd Select club teams and the Select 40 Champions squad. She averaged 19 ppg for Burlingame before transferring to Archbishop Mitty, which contains one of the best high school teams for girls' basketball in California.
Woodruff on Weisman: "A major weapon from the west coast. She continues the theme of versatility. Her size and perimeter shooting ability will make her a tough matchup for PL opponents. She is fully committed to her personal development and will contribute greatly with her work ethic and overall skill-set."
Shooting Guard/Forward Reese Zemitis travels to Bucknell from Langhorne, Pennsylvania. She plays for Neshaminy High School and has racked up numerous honors, including twice serving as varsity captain, three times named as First Team All-SOL, Third Team All-State, and winning an MVP letter. She has averaged 14 PPG and 7 RPG to inch near 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Zemitis has played for Mid-Atlantic Magic AAU and Hoop Group Champions. She had three cousins who played sports in college, including a Bucknellian, Edward Curran.
Woodruff on Zemitis: "She is versatile & tough, can play multiple positions and loves to compete. She can score at all three levels of the defense and loves to be coached. She was our first commit in this recruiting cycle and set the tone for what we believe is a championship-level group."
The Bison open up the home slate with the FDU game on Wednesday.
