LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell running back Coleman Bennett has been named Bison of the Week for helping carry the football team to a 21-13 victory over Cornell on Saturday. Bennett was at the center of a potent rushing attack that left the Big Red on their heels.
Bennett's 157 net rushing yards were the most by a Bison since Chad Freshnock ran for 174 in 2017. Bennett ran the ball 29 times, averaging 5.4 yards per carry and accounting for 41 percent of Bucknell's offensive plays. The 29 carries were the most by a single Bucknell player since Joey DeFloria ran the ball 31 times in a win at Georgetown in 2016.
Bennett gashed the Cornell defense with six runs of 14 yards or more, including three runs of over 20 yards. He carried the ball nine times for 76 yards on Bucknell's first scoring drive, including a 27-yard run on a 3rd-and-14.
A team captain, Bennett currently leads the Bison in rushing and kick return yards this season, and he ranks third on the team in receiving yards. The senior sits atop the Patriot League and ranks ninth in all of FCS with 146.8 all-purpose yards per game.
Bennett has now eclipsed 100 rushing yards in back-to-back games and is 108 yards shy of 1,000 for his career. He's scored five career touchdowns, including two this season.
This is the second time Bennett has been named the Bison Athlete of the Week. He received the honor last November after returning a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and rushing for 63 yards and a score in a win at Georgetown.
Bucknell is back at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 21 to host Lehigh at 1 p.m.
