WORCESTER, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (9-9, 5-4 PL) dodged the trap game and won a 3-1 decision (25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16) over the Holy Cross Crusaders (3-15, 0-9 PL). Birthday lady Caleigh O'Connell provided the push with 42 assists and 13 digs to lead the Bison in both categories. Bri Frazilus recorded a game-high 15 kills. Cameron Lloyd (14) and Catherine Jamison (10) also notched higher totals than Holy Cross' leading attacker. The Bison obtained 57 kills to the Crusaders' 30.Â
"We competed hard tonight," said head coach Tyler Hagstrom. "Holy Cross pushed us, especially in the second set, and we responded well in the third set by turning up the aggressiveness from the service, which carried over in the rest of our play."
Recap
The Bison set the tone by sprinting to a 4-1 lead. Bucknell kept the pressure on extending the margin to 9-5. A 4-0 run by the Orange & Blue provided some breathing room. Holy Cross kept scratching and crept within 19-12. It proved insignificant. The Bison went on a 6-2 stretch with a Lloyd kill, ending the set in a 25-14 victory.
The Crusaders cut their way to a 6-2 lead to start the second set. Bucknell battled back to draw ahead 7-6. Holy Cross regained the lead at 11-10, and with momentum in the Worcester team's favor, they went on a 4-0 run to gain a sizable edge. The Bison fought back to 17-15, but a 5-1 stretch kept the Lewisburg team at bay. Bucknell sneaked within 22-19, but they could get no closer and lost the set, 25-21. It was only Holy Cross' third set win in conference play.Â
Bucknell used the third set to wash away the bitterness of the previous stanza. With the score at 5-5, the Bison posted the most decisive run. The 6-0 stretch powered by three Frazilus kills essentially decided the set and match, as Holy Cross never led or tied again. Bucknell continued to motor along, increasing its lead to 20-10. Holy Cross cut the deficit to 22-15 before a 3-0 run climaxed by a Frazilus kill won the set.Â
The Bison were determined to end the game in four sets and blitzed out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth segment. Bucknell kept the pressure on the Crusaders and increased the margin to 15-6. To Holy Cross' credit, the purple team kept fighting and did creep to within 20-13. But it mattered naught. The Bison were locked in and kept scoring points. With the score at 24-16, a Holy Cross service error ended the set and match. It was an anticlimactic finish, but the Bison were happy enough with the win. Â
