LEWISBURG, Pa. – USRowing recently announced its eight 2022 Board of Directors-selected awards, and former Bucknell standout Carol Schoenecker '11 received the Ernestine Bayer Award "in recognition of outstanding contributions to women's rowing and/or an outstanding woman in rowing."
The award winners will be recognized at the 2023 USRowing Annual Convention, which is scheduled to take place Feb. 3-5, 2023, in Atlantic City, N.J.
Schoenecker was a highly decorated rower during her Bucknell days, when she captured four straight Patriot League gold medals in the Varsity Eight, which led to team championships for the Bison in all four of her collegiate seasons. Schoenecker was an All-Patriot League, Academic All-Patriot League, CRCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region, and CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honoree.
Schoenecker was just as impactful off the water during her time at Bucknell, which culminated with her winning the 2011 'ray Bucknell Award, "presented to the senior student-athlete who through his/her actions has worked to eliminate attitudes and actions that have separated, excluded or marginalized people in the past and has facilitated true understanding and recognition among multiple campus and Lewisburg constituencies."
Schoenecker studied the history and cultures of the African Diaspora in Ghana, Benin, and Togo; she was a member of the Black Student Union and Alumni Mentor Program; and she played first violin in the Bucknell University Orchestra.
Since graduation, Schoenecker has remained heavily involved in the sport of rowing while going on to earn both a master's degree in social and public policy and a doctor of education degree in educational leadership from Duquesne University. She spent time as an assistant coach at Duquesne and Robert Morris in her native Pittsburgh, and in June 2020 she was elevated to head coach at RMU. She also spent two summers coaching junior women at the Penn Athletic Club Rowing Association in Philadelphia.
Schoenecker has been a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion as both a coach and a teacher. She has served as an AmeriCorps member in Pittsburgh and spent two years teaching second and third grade with Teach for America in St. Joseph, La. She has been an adjunct faculty instructor at the Duquesne School of Education, and she currently works as a college readiness coordinator with the Education Success Foundation.
