WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Bucknell women's golf team counted three scores of 78 or better in each of the first two rounds on a solid opening day at the William & Mary Invitational on Monday. Freshman Paige Richter fired a 1-over-par 73 in her very first collegiate round, and Kelsey Yi and Tara Thomas are also off to strong starts.
Bucknell is in 10th place as a team after posting rounds of 309 and 314. The 623 total is four shots behind ninth-place Delaware State. Richmond, led by a school-record 7-under 65 from freshman Hannah Lydic, has the lead with a 586 total (287-299). Elon (588) and Charleston Southern (589) are close behind heading into Tuesday's final round.
Richter started her college career in style, logging two birdies and 13 pars on the way to her 73. She began on the 14th hole and got out to a par-par-birdie start. Richter added another birdie at hole No. 1 and finished the round by parring 10 of the final 11 holes. She made two more birdies in the afternoon round, but a triple-bogey at the par-4 fourth hole led to a 78. With a 151 total, Richter sits in a tie for 19th place on the individual leaderboard.
Thomas and Kelsey Yi are both at 154 through 36 holes, good for a tie for 27th. Yi shot 78-76 and Thomas 77-77. Kayla Yi followed with rounds of 81-83, and Sahana Paravantavida carded a pair of 87s.
Freshman Erin Drahnak also made her collegiate debut on Monday and shot 83-85 while playing as an individual.
Lydic made seven birdies and no bogeys on the way to her opening-round 65. She followed with a 71 in the afternoon for an 8-under 136 total. Lydic has a four-shot lead over Florida Atlantic indie Clemence Cadeac. Annabelle Jennings of Longwood (-3) and Leiu Yuenyong (-1) of Elon are also under par after 36 holes.
