RELIVE BUCKNELL'S GOLD-MEDAL PERFORMANCE:
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell Varsity Eight has been selected as the Bison of the Week after a gold-medal performance at Friday's Patriot League Championships.
After qualifying with the fifth-fastest preliminary time, Bucknell's lead boat improved by 28 seconds in the Grand Final and pulled away from the field all the way out in lane six. The Bison Varsity Eight defeated second-place Boston University by more than seven seconds and third-place Navy by more than nine, making the third-largest margin of victory in the V8 final in Patriot League history. It was the biggest runaway since Bucknell defeated Navy by nearly 15 seconds in 2008.
The victory earned the Bison the Patriot League Boat of the Year honor for the first time in 10 years. Bucknell last won the Varsity Eight title in 2012, and the team's last gold medal came when the Second Varsity Eight won in 2016.
Bucknell's Varsity Eight was coxed by Juliette Gaggini, with Erin Sullivan in the stroke seat followed by Maddie Wickers, Natalie Kreusch, Caroline Brandt, Kona Glenn, Hayden Groves, Kate Meerscheidt, and Elizabeth Berlinger.
Bucknell finished a close second in the team standings. The Bison accrued 48 points, just two behind Boston University for the title. Six-time defending champion Navy finished third with 46 points.
The Varsity Eight is not finished this season. The group will be making an international excursion in mid-June for the Royal Henley Regatta in England followed by a trip to Lucerne, Switzerland.
