LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's track & field team picked up four event wins and finished second out of 10 teams at the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Bison scored 99 points and came in just behind first-place Mount St. Mary's (106).
"Although we were not too concerned with the team score and we got beat in a very close meet with Mount St. Mary's, I was very pleased with how our men competed as a team. Our guys really worked hard out there in every event, and it was our best team performance of the season. We have battled the injury bug all year, but we seem to be getting a few guys back slowly but surely. Now we need to just put things together over the next two weeks to prepare for leagues," said head coach Kevin Donner.
Among Bucknell's strongest events of the day was the 3000 steeplechase in which four different Bison scored. Leading the way was Noah Martin, who took first with a 9:12.97. Jeffery Gibbs took fourth (9:30.76), Asa Friedrich placed fifth (9:39.11) and Grayson Crockett finished sixth (9:41.22) to collect 17 points.
Bucknell took the top two spots in the hammer throw, as John Calisi won the event with a solid personal best of 182-10, and Robert Feeney placed second with a 176-3.
Also earning wins were Grant Ellis and Ian Lawrence. Ellis took first in the high jump with a 6-7, and Lawrence posted a personal-best 46-5.5 in a triple jump win. Jaden Rouse (5th, 44-9.5) and Chris Sims (6th, 44-4) also scored in the triple jump, giving the Bison 13 points in the event.
Anthony Zamarra put up an impressive shot put mark for a second straight week, finishing third with a 54-8.25. It was just shy of the mark he set at the Bison Outdoor Classic (54-9.25) that ranks second in the Bucknell record book. Braden Stryker (6th, 47-6.25) also scored in the event on Saturday.
Also finishing third in their events were Matthew Perello in the 200 (3rd, 22.23) and Samuel Whittaker in the 3000 (3rd, 8:30.07).
Max Spaulding placed fourth in the 400 hurdles, running a 56.97, and he was joined by teammate Brian Kennedy in fifth with a 58.39.
Bucknell added three points in the long jump behind the efforts of Tommy Cahill (5th, 21-3.5) and Lawrence (6th, 20-8). Brendan O'Toole (5th, 3:52.92) and Bobby Lynam (6th, 3:54.02) combined for three points in the 1500 as well.
Also notable were Trevor Drescher in the javelin (6th, 172-5) and Braden Stryker in the discus (6th, 147-9), who each added a point to the Bison tally.
Lastly, Bucknell's 4x100 relay team finished third (43.05), and its 4x400 team placed fifth (3:23.48).
Up next, Bucknell sees its final week of competition before the Patriot League outdoor championships. Select Bison will make the trip to the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29. Others will attend the single-day Maroon & Gold Invite at Bloomsburg on Friday.
